Wal-Mart drops price on Mobil 1

I was shopping at my local Wal-Mart last night, and stumbled upon a price drop on Mobil 1, 5 Qt. jugs, various weights. Regularly $26.00, Now $22.00. Most, but not all viscosities were marked on the shelf with the lower price. I bought 2 jugs of 10W30. I might go back to see if 5W30 is on sale for my other car. I didn't see any expiration date for the lower price.

Just wanted to let everyone know.

why don't you use 5W30?
Re: Wal-Mart drops price on Mobil 1 (MAC1LSR)

It's all on sale.

I bought a 5 quarter for the R (plus 1 quart) of 10-30 and another for the MDX of 5-20.

Forgot to post this!

I do, from approximately November through April, and switch to 10W30 from May through October. I just don't feel comfortable using 5W30 in the middle of summer when it is 95 degrees outside and the A/C is on full blast.
Re: Wal-Mart drops price on Mobil 1 (Needsdecaf)

Thanks Needsdecaf! Guess I'm making another trip to the Wal-Mart to buy some 5W30 Mobil 1, and to load up the back of the V70R with gardening supplies.
All you need is 10w30 here on the east coast...Ive gotta pick up a couple of jugs: )
Re: (B.G.)

I noticed this a few weeks ago and also neglected to post it. For that I am sorry (don't bludgeon me!!).

I am probably going back this week to get another jug for my next oil change at the end of the summer. That stuff rarely goes on sale.
Re: (vernk)

I got some last night, many are on sale - I got some castrol edge synthetic. I want to see if it makes any difference in when the low oil light comes on. I forgot how much I paid for this stuff, I got some other things while shopping too, but I remember it was marked ~$34 and I only paid 20 something at the counter (5qt jug).

How come they don't carry royal purple in 5qt jugs? Single quarts kill ya.

5W30 has the exact same hot viscosity as 10W30. If you're worried about a 30 weight oil getting too thin when it's hot, then you should be running a 40 weight oil. Running 10W30 in the summer provides you absolutely no benefit over 5W30. If you want better protection for your turbo motor when it's hot, try Mobil1 0w40. That's what I run all year round.

I bought the Castrol Edge too! $26 for a 5 quart jug.

One of these days I'm gona have to read up on what exactly all these numbers and weights and all that mean.

Didn't volvo also recommend different oils for the R depending on the year? What's up with that?

My manual shows 5w30 having a lower ambient temp than 10w30, so I do the same as MAC1LSR, thanks to the R's manual.

Actually, my goal was to use an oil with less viscosity index improver additive, when possible. Yes, I could use 0W40 all year round. I'm just afraid it has a sizable amount of VI improver in it. Don't know if that is true or not. I would love to hear from someone working in the lab that knows.

Let's not rehash the oil debate (yet again). The 04/05 manuals offer different advice than the later manuals. Based on the range shown in the manual, I also run 10/30 M1 year round.

I wouldn't worry about what Volvo "recommends". If you use a synthetic 30 or 40 weight oil, you'll be just fine.

I agree. I'm sick of this topic already! Let's change the subject. Hey, I saw a new Camaro drive by yesterday. Looks nice on the outside, but the instrument gauges that I saw on the Chevy website sure look revolting and very cheap. But I bet they are illuminated more evenly than our R watchdial gauges (mandatory R content here).

The polymers you talk about as VI improver won't hurt anything, it's just oil tech at it's best.
Re: Wal-Mart drops price on Mobil 1 (MAC1LSR)

If you're willing to run 0w30, then Mobil 1 is offering a $10 mail in rebate until the end of August, which would bring your cost down to $12 for 5 quarts.

FYI - Mobil 1 0w40 will shear down to a 30 weight within 100 miles. Not that it's a bad thing, just worth noting. Furthermore, the viscosity index improvers (VIIs) can be a problem if you push the oil to excessive temperatures, as the polymers used can sludge up at very high temperatures. So if you're planning on really pushing the oil you would be better off with an oil with less VIIs. It's why a lot of race oils are straight weights (Actually as far as I know most, if not all, straight SAE 30 weight racing oils are actually 10w30 oils, since they do change viscosity across the temperature range in accordance with the requirements to be 10w30 certified).

Jeff

Fellow SSeRs, lol
Long time admirer of R forums; first time poster [please be gentle lol].

I have a 06 S60 2.5T AWD (non-R sigh).
I've never used synthetic oil before. Should only R's use synthetic or do you guys recommend my switching over starting on my next oil change (current miles: 42,8xx)..?

I live in NJ/NYC area.. if so, which should I get? Mobil 1 0w30? 5w30? 10w30?

Sorry if my asking the question is "pouring gasoline into the fire" on the thread..
