I was behind an 855 and a V70 today in traffic and looking at their rear taillights. Obviously, the 850 has orange turnsignals in the upper rear lenses (along the C-pillar) whereas the newer V70 has clear lenses with amber bulbs beneath. The pieces look almost identical, and I was wondering if any 855 owners had ever switched them? If you have, can you post photos?

Sure you can. My 1998 V70 GLT was a absolute nightmare. One problem after another. Both before and after warrantee. After the warrantee it was much more painfull. I couldn't afford to keep it with all the problems it was having. I sold it in 2001 with 80,000 miles. Right before I sold it I found my 1997 850R with 34,000 and the price I bought the 850R for was the same price I sold the V70 for so it was a no brainer. The 850R has been a great Car. Since then I bought a 1998 S70 T-5 and that has also been very, very good.

Back to the lights, I'm very glad I did that switch. Makes a huge difference. Even though I did it for free, looking at the difference today and if I had to do it over, the change will be worth $250, at least.

Dudes- even if the 855R had 100K miles, I would buy it over a V70 GLT. for starters, the pedigree is top notch; It's an R- exclusive, tunable, etc. People buy "older" cars after having "newer" ones all the time. My friend sold a 2000 Acura(lower miles) and bought a 95(i think) 540i(high miles)!!

Re: (GT854T5)

I'm on the fence about the V70 taillight swap.

The truth is, I'm constantly checking eBay for the V70 upper lights, but rarely have come across more than one. I just don't know it's worth the cost.

I actually like the orange. I just polished the lenses to a really high gloss so I can't really see the point of paying to swap over.

I don't know how long I'll be able to keep the car, so I'm not interested in dumping money needlessly into it.

Re: (ACD)

What your friend did, I would not have done, but what you did I definately would have done if I had that many problems with my car. I would have bought a 1996(MY97) 5 series hence the newer look. I went from a 98 Toyota Camry to a 96 855

Re: (895meztz94)

I just did this upgrade recently on my '96 855T because some idiot took out my right tail lights in a parking lot. Even though it was a hit-n-run, I decided it was an opportunity to upgrade to clear V70 lights. I ended up purchasing left and right upper lights from Rancho Cordova Salvage (http://www.rcsr.com) for $50/each plus a lower right for $50. After buffing out some minor imperfections in the lenses, I installed them. I think they look awesome!

In addition, some of the orange tint had come off one of the turn signal bulbs, so it gave me the idea to just remove the rest of it and do the same on the other side. So, now I have clear bulbs with clear lenses on both sides which look even better and brighter. Just a note, these turn signal bulbs did not interchange with any of the other bulbs. The two nubs on the base of the bulb are 135 degrees from each other instead of 180 deg. That's why I used a razor blade to remove the orange tint, instead of just replacing them.

Re: (jeongl)

I'm not a big fan of white lights for turnsignals.... actually I believe legally they are supposed to be amber.

I had the same prob finding bulbs that'd fit when I put red/clear/clear/red taillights on my 245. I just took some ambers and ground off one of the metal nubs on the bulb, and now they fit fine.

Re: (Sherman)

I love the way these look, but has anyone ever seen entirely clear tail lights on a volvo? I have always wondered how it would look, personally, mine is white and I think that with colored bulbs would be pretty hot. Just dunno how ricey it would make it look either

Re: (Sherman)

FYI, legally, you should have amber only. Colors such as green, blue, etc. will most likely get you pulled over at some point or another.

I've never quite gotten the colored light thing. To each their own, and if you love it, that's fine. To me though, it's just decoration and not functional, and it's also confusing for other drivers, so who knows what sort of liability issues might be included.
