Re: Wagon Owners Check for Rust on your tailgait .... (Chilled Man)

I just got a new rear window seal for across the base of the rear window, I'll take a look this weekend and see how it looks in that spot.
Why not replace the tailgate? That's what I'm planning to do to cure the rust that keeps forming on the lower corner of the driver's side.

Re: (Chilled Man)

Once rust appears on these cars, it will come back no matter what you treat it with. This has been the case with my tailgate. It has come back every second year since I've had the car (2004), and last year, I even hit the spot with corrosion sealer and still it came back.

Also watch out for a strip of rust along the top of the tailgate. It's easy to look for when you have the tailgate up. I think it's pretty easy to just sand away a 1/8" strip and then use touch-up paint to do that part (put a towel under it on the roof!)
Good call Chris on replacing that weatherstripping. I have to do that on my XC in Sweden. Does it require anything besides the weatherstrip itself? I haven't looked carefully to see how it's attached.

Re: (Big Will)

I didn't like how my seal was fitting on the car, it was lifting off on the driver's side and would not stay attached. It looks as though it just snaps in to place, no silicone or sealant came with it.

Here's the part number:

Re: (Runamok)

Hmmm, we have two wagons, the 98 T5 and the 00 R, and neither show any corrosion whatsoever under the seal, and our climate is pretty tough on cars up here.

My tailgate doen't have any rust but the "seal" is all deformed and half twisted. The ends aren't coated or anything so I think the moisture gets in and they rot from the outside.

Re: (Runamok)

Eastwood makes a spray wax that works great in places like this. If your car hasn't started rusting there yet, just pop the seal off and spray the area with wax. The overspray cleans up with mineral spirits.
