Hey all.
Strange new thing happened to me yesterday. Was driving the R with the windows down (fairly normal occurrence even though it is July in NoVA) when I heard a strange noise as I let off the gas.
My setup: RICA Stage 1, CAI, BMC filter, no airbox lid currently (don't ask), IPD TCV.
Normally when the car shifts or I let off the gas, I get the normal Volvo recirc sound like Darth Vader sighing. Yesterday after letting off the gas during "spirited" driving (someone was blocking my way from changing lanes and I needed to get over so I was making plenty of boost) I hear what I could only describe as a "horn-like" sound. A small "toot" or "beep", like you tooted your horn at someone waiting for a light that wasn't going, only quieter. It only did it 3 times, and I could not get it to replicate (although those times I probably did not have as much boost built, I was not in an area to do so).
Thoughts? Normal? Bad CBV? Nothing to worry about?
I should say that I have some occasional stuttering during hard acceleration that I thought was the RICA tune but now I'm wondering if the tune is exacerbating something else......

Re: VROOM, PSHHHH......beep? (Needsdecaf)

The CBV makes a fluttering sound when it fails as I understand. So hopefully it's not that.
I saw a thread mentioning a relatively easily tightening of a recirculating (?)valve on the turbo - but I don't know more about this, and what this might be specifically, or how it might be tightened?

pop off your intake hose to your turbo to feel for shaft play .

If it does much you have a bearing failing. A tiny bit of play is pretty normal on a turbo.

And if the turbo bearings were bad it would probably do it again pretty easily. So the beep is new to me. Possible a check valve somewhere in the intake system leak a bit of boost causing the beep or something similar. I would see if I could duplicate it, then start to worry. Having the Airbox cover off will emit more strange noises than you would normally hear.

And if the compressor is hitting the housing, while the intake hose is off, you can use a mirror and if its hit you should be able to make out marks on the inside of teh housing

So I should have heard it by now.
I will keep an ear out and pull the OTE pipe next oil change (soon).
I would think that the spinning compresser wheel would make a zing or ting or other metallic ringing noise. This definitely didn't sound like that. Much more of an electric horn type beep.
Good to know it doesn't sound like turbo trouble. How about CBV diaphragm?

Re: VROOM, PSHHHH......beep? (JRL)

I've known people who have ran the cover off of the airbox for quite a few thousand miles without issue. Is the filter secured, with the cover off, at least? I saw wire used from one side of the box to the other, over the filter, holding the filter down.
As far as the beep goes, if your car is running well, and you dont hear said beep again, you;re probably ok? Good luck

LOL
My clear airbox lid lexan came unglued. So the lid is not off, but there is a big hole in it.
Filter is in no danger of dislodging.
