Hi All,

I've had problems with sluggish take off, harsh shift change and some shuddering on take off. Car is still usable for my daily driver but its a bit annoying. The error code pulled from the car by the dealer is TCM-P094900 - hydraulic and mechanical.

I've taken it to the local dealer who has quoted me $9,000AUD to replace the internal clutch pack and internal control system.

The car's only done 90,000k and hasnt been used for towing so just wondering if anyone else has had this issue before as I can't find much online about that specific error.

I am trying to work out if I should just live with the issue or if its going to to be terminal and need replacement soon. Anyway, thoughts are welcome ....

Cheers

My thought is, find a good independent mechanic that works on Volvo's or specialize on Volvo's and see what he says. Most dealers will rip you off. Another option is find a used transmission from a junk yard and have it replaced.

White I found a low km box at a local wreckers after checking with two different mechanics local to this area both said the T5 (ford) box was rubbish and were not keen to do the work :( Looks like I'll just have to sell it and move it on ...

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information TCM-P094900

Condition
In the transmission, there is cooperation between internal components within electronics, hydraulics and mechanical. They adapt to each other so that the transmission's functionality becomes as good as possible. This procedure is basic, called "initial adaptation", and is controlled by Transmission control module (TCM). An example of function is how the solenoids are to be controlled for the hydraulic flow to be correct. A basic mechanical setting is also performed using torque calculations before the transmission can be calibrated using functions and procedures in the software.
The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the control module detects that:
One of the initial adaptations has not been completed without fault.
The control module's test for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) starts in the event of:
Ignition switch position II.
Note! The control module can only detect the fault once the test has been started and the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored when the conditions are met.

Substitute value
Failure reaction 51.
For more information on fault reactions in the transmission control module (TCM), see: Malfunction reactions
Possible source
Initial adaptation not performed.

Fault symptom
Text window and warning symbol/Yellow symbol and text message
Automatic transmission/No forward/reverse movement in gear
Starting/Engine does not start/Unsure when/at all times

Failure reaction 51:
- No crawl mode
- If the position of the accelerator is greater than a calibrated level (approximately 3%), gives failure reaction 10.

Failure reaction 10:
Opens the coupling, results in no drive.
- Cuts the drive circuits between the battery and solenoids.
The function for automatic engine start/stop turns off.

Since the error code doesn't exactly seem to describe the same thing as you do, and I am merely a certified opinion-haverer, I wouldn't rush to replace the entire thing. With the torque converter equipped gearbox in most Volvos, symptoms similar you yours can be caused by a low oil level for one thing or a poor adaption. Adaption is mentioned in the fault code above and I'm guessing it's the same procedure as on a torque converter gearbox, learning it how to perform the shifts in terms of oil pressures. Also, I think there is an oil change interval on this gearbox, unlike other volvo gearboxes that has no change interval. Has it ever been changed? I think the interval is 60k km or 37.5k miles.
