Re: Volvo V50 vs. Subaru Legacy on Fifth Gear (s40turbo585)

Too bad. Never fun to see your ride getting bum reviews. But instead of griping about her complaints, I'll just say that the video made me curious to test drive a Legacy.
Oh. One thing I will say though: I wonder what rubber came with her test car. The Michelins that were OEM on my V50 are on the crummy end of the spectrum. It feels like an unfair representation of the vehicle when I think of someone doing a track test with those Michelins still on.

The Subaru only comes with a slushbox in the States, so it's a different comparison here. The Subaru sucks with the crappy auto.
That's why I chose the volvo -- I'd own the auto Subaru at the track.

Re: Volvo V50 vs. Subaru Legacy on Fifth Gear (s40turbo585)

First off, V50 T5 AWD vs. Legacy Spec-B is not exactly a fair fight. The Spec-B has an upgraded suspension, the steering was retuned, etc. It should have been the GT that the V50 went up against. That's like tracking a AMG C55 vs the M3 CSL and whining about how the C55 is a pig compared to the M3 CSL.
Secondly, the brand image got in the way. She starts out talking about the V50 as Volvo's smallest estate. That's nice to know. She praises Subaru with the Impreza and rally herritage. Not a good start.
But beyond that, she brings up some valid points. Our AWD is really FWD until something goes wrong. You can induce the Legacy to be tail-happy, which is always good on track tests. I can't say the handling is awful, and it's not the best I've driven. It's unique. I don't hate it.
On the track, the Legacy is better. I have no problem with that.

Re: Volvo V50 vs. Subaru Legacy on Fifth Gear (s40turbo585)

I have an S40, and one thing I will agree with is the steering. I was on the freeway the other day, and ,where I live, to change from one freeway to the next there's a long, curved, upward grade overpass that most people don't and shouldnt have to slow down for, but I had to. The steering was so light at 65 mph (should have been heavy on the highway) that I immediately slowed down to about 50/55 because it scared the sh** out of me, it felt like I was not in control of the car at all. Hopefully there's not something wrong with my car, but the straight line stability on the highway is great, but once I had to turn the steering off center at speed it was way too light and uncommunicative. That's one of the major complaints I have about my car, but besides that, I'd take it any day over a Subaru Legacy.

Another thing to remember is that she complained about the DSTC getting in the way on the Volvo. Well, if you want a driver’s car on the track, turn the DSTC off, or at least reduce it.
regards,
MAJ

Only the R has this feature. You can turn off the Spin Control part of DSTC, if you're stuck in snow or mud this is needed to rock the car. But you can't disable or even reduce Yaw Control. Try it on your car and you'll notice the message says "DSTC Spin Control Off"/"DSTC On", it means it.
Tom.

Re: Volvo V50 vs. Subaru Legacy on Fifth Gear (Mistral)

I'm sorry but "Fifth Gear" and it's progenitor "Top Gear" are not decent motoring shows anymore. They pander to the boy racers by having ridiculous "shootouts" around a race track which does not reflect the true use that these cars are going to be put to. The rarely, if ever, do decent comparitive roadtests, and I mean ROAD tests, between similar size/types anymore.
"Top Gear" is even worse - they constantly feature supercars and waste half the show racing a Ferrari/Porsche/Bugatti/Pagani right across Europe against 'some other form of public transport'. Ok it makes for entertaining viewing, but it does not really fill the slot of a consumer motoring programme, unless you have £200,000 and a race track burning a hole in your pocket.
Regarding this test - sure the Subaru was 2 seconds quicker round the track, but when you're stuck in nose to tail traffic or when your average speed is never higher than 35mph that little test is quite bloody pointless. The main reason I got the V50 was for comfort. I drove a Forester for sometime and while it wasn't a bad car, the seats were less than comfortable over a period of time.
No such issues with the V50. It is the most comfortable car I have driven. I'm sure that if you wish to spend a shed load of money you can buy as much comfort, but I don't have a shed load of anything.
The only good thing about that video is hearing Vicki Butler Henderson say "Time for a quickie..."

*shrug* I took my V50 to the track 8 days ago and the car performed just fine.
You don't want a crazy slip angle if you want to run fast laps anyway.
Not all of us just bought the car for grocery getting.

Top Gear is hardly the TV equivalent of Consumer Reports. It's more in line with Road and Track or Car and Driver. poop we'll never afford.
That being said, it's the most entertaining car show on TV, and one of the most entertaining shows period. Even the wife watches it and laughs her butt off, and she couldn't care less about cars.

Re: (quick)

I'm with you there. I have yet to have mine on track, but I will. In the meantime, I've carved up everything from the Duffey Lake Rd here in BC, to the 101 coming north from San Francisco. The car is light, predictable, planted as all hell, and capable of some serious speeds into corners. No problems at all, even on the stock Michelin's.
One thing I noticed in here test was that she mentioned the long throws of the Subaru shifter, but not the light, direct, lovely throws of the Volvo. I drove a Subaru Legacy, and one of the things I HATED was the shifter. That, along with the tinny build quality, frameless windows, Japanese feeling plastic, just a yucky car in general. Sure, for the 4 of 5 times a year I wring the hell out of car, the Subaru MIGHT be faster, but I could never live with it day in and day out. Besides, I have several old BMW's to flog when the need arises.
Final note, the Legacy Spec B is kind of Subaru's version of a Volvo R model. Not exactly a fair comparo. Now, if Volvo would wake up, and build a V50 R, then you've got something. Of course, it would be more money than the Subaru, so everyone would bitch about that instead. Can't win.
Al

Although I do like the frameless windows, I just don't like the way the door closes. The LGT just didn't appeal to me. I really, really wanted to like the LGT. But I liked the Volvo better after test driving them back to back. Overall it felt a lot more better built and the interior design was better. Along with the safety issues and cheaper runing costs (less gas money, less insurance). And I wanted a red car- the Volvo red was better looking. After driving the LGT, well I wanted something different since I've been driving Japanese cars all my life.
That being said, the Legacy is a nice car- if Subaru can improve the build quality and fix a few things here and there, they'll have a winner. When it's time for me to look for a new car, I'll consider the Legacy again.
If you really want performance, a real track beast... well both are a waste of money. For our price range, you're better off going with a Impreza WRX STi or a EVO.

Whoever thinks Top Gear should be a TV version of Consumer Reports has completely missed the point. It's all about entertainment, and getting to "experience" all the rare exotic cars we would never see (much less drive) otherwise. Fifth Gear is much less entertaining, but has VBH, so is still well worth watching.
IMHO, both shows keep getting better and better (I've been watching both for about 3 seasons straight - downloads from finalgear.com) ... speaking of which... seems today's top gear is 20% done downloading Can't wait!
