I don't think that the Focus heritage will hurt the S40/V50 at all. The 40-series is not really known for its good handling and chassis dynamics, whereas the Focus always gets rave reviews for this exact same characteristic. Even the Mazda Protege has excellent handling characteristics at a fraction of the cost of the 40-series.

The only thing that 2nd generation Focus chassis will do is make the 40-series even better than it already is. It is a good thing that Mazda will be heading the operations for this new project because they really know how to build small cars well IMHO.

dg,

I am not exactly sure if the current Protege is based off of the Focus chassis, but I know for sure that the next Focus chassis will spawn the next Protege and S40/V50.

I am not exactly sure why the V40 sells so poorly here in the United States compared to the S40.

You are right, I think that Volvo will have a problem selling the V50 just like they did the V40, unless they make an "XC" version of some sort just like the "Outback" series.

The "XC" continues to be the best selling version of the V70 series. I never thought that would happened, but it has. I am sure there will be a ton of people that will buy a V50 XC if they ever make it.
