Volvo UK has just announced a host of updates to the not exactly stale XC40 compact crossover. That includes a new gearbox, more power, new colours, and a few other new options.

It starts with the 1.5L T3 three-cylinder engine that Volvo added to the range last summer. It gets more power, climbing from 156 hp to 164. And where it arrived with only a six-speed stick, now it can be had with an eight-speed automatic as well. The 2.0L four-cylinder T4 is now available with front-drive in addition to the all-wheel drive it already had. Which makes it a bit cheaper and a bit more fuel efficient.

All automatic R-Design trims get paddle shifters, because R-Design is sportier. Other changes include new auto-fold mirrors and a 12V power outlet in the boot. Plus a locking glovebox.

Winter drivers can add a Winter Plus pack that comes with a heated wheel and heated rear seats.

On the safety front, Blind Sport Information System gets a new steer assist option that can return the car to the lane to avoid a collision.

And finally, there are three new colours. Thunder Grey, Glacier Silver, and Pebble Grey.

The refreshed XC40 is on sale now starting from £28,965. Volvo says that a T5 Twin Engine PHEV version will be arriving early next year with details shortly.
