For the first time, the Swedish automaker has assembled an all-female panel to critique a new product -in this case, the 2003 Volvo XC90, the company's first sport-utility vehicle. The XC90 will debut in November and start at $35,000.
The unique panel, made up of 18 southern California business professionals and housewives, told Volvo to "make the vehicle simple for us to use -- don't confuse us," says John Neu, XC90 project manager for North America. "That's been our mantra," Neu said.
Among the XC90's female-friendly features:
* An unusual standard side air curtain system that covers even third-row passengers.
* What has to be the tiniest tailgate on any SUV, but the better to load groceries and yet it can hold up to 500 pounds.
* A sliding middle seat in the second row with an integrated child booster seat that's standard on the seven-passenger model.
* An optional night vision system that's not projected onto the windshield but pops up from the instrument panel on a screen. This feature helps drivers see up to five times the distance illuminated by the headlights. The pop-up screen eliminates distortion and ghost images common with other night-vision systems. It will be priced around $2,250.

$35k starting, not bad, but $2,250 for the Night Vision system? Yikes!
-Drew
