Volvo is bringing a classic that was owned by one of the company's founders to the Techno Classica Essen. The PV36 belonged to Gustaf Larson and will be on display at the largest classic car show in the world.
It's a very Art Deco design, especially from a company that would come to be known for cars that were more about straight lines than curves. Not surprisingly, it was designed by someone who had spent time designing cars in America, Ivar Örnberg. He came to Volvo after a stint with companies like Hupmobile.
Volvo built just 500 PV36s from 1935-1938. This one is chassis 85. It was owned new by Larson, who kept it for three years.
The automaker says that except for an early re-paint, the car is practically untouched since that initial delivery.
Alongside the PV36, Volvo will show the S60 sedan. Appropriate that the company's first US-built car will make its German debut along with the American-style classic.
Other Volvos on-stand at the show will be a 1929 PV4. The company's first sedan. There will be a 1966 Amazon, a 1969 164, a 1981 240 Turbo (the company's first turbo car) and a 1995 850 T-5R.
