[x-posted to VS]
So, I sit here typing this, amazed that I am alive, and not hurt worse than I am.....
Sunday evening, about 6:00 pm my wife and I decided to go out and have dinner, so we hop in my car and off we go...
We are heading down green Lane, a long, straight road. about 100 yards in front of us (Heading in the same direction) is an ambulance, with it's lights on. around here, emergency vehicles are equipped with "opticons" These are devices that change traffic lights green for the emergency vehicles.
Well, this ambulance goes thru the intersection and it's opticon turns the light green. We know this, because on top of the traffic signal is a strobing white light, that lets the ambulance know it has the green.
About 10-15 seconds later, we enter the intersection. My wife even commented that the opticon was still active.
Suddenly, there was a firetruck in the intersection. A full size "Engine" style. We heard no siren, it was just there.
I hit the brakes hard, and tired to cut the wheel to the left. Then there was a most terrible sound. I still can't get it out of my head. I felt like I got punched in the face, and I heard my wife scream "get out of the car, she's on fire" as soon as I tried to get out, I knew my left leg was broken. I could just feel my ankle give way. I opened my door, and tried to get out, but the seatbelt was still buckled. I got it undone, and literally HOPPED on one foot away from the car.
Well, she wasn't on fire, it was just the chem from the airbags, but my wife didn't know that...
I lay on the ground, in friggin agony (Broken in 2 places - have to get surgery on 8/7)
There were a LOT of people around in what seemed like just a few mins. A guy did come up to us and say he saw it all, the firetruck didn't even touch his brakes, he went right thru the red light, without slowing.
Perhaps he didn't have his lights on, or perhaps the opticon didn't get his signal due to the other ambulance... I dunno at this point, and the police report won't be ready until tomorrow.
My wife said another woman told the police the firetruck ran the light, and I was told the cop who took my wallet and info on scene told my wife "They are supposed to proceed with caution, they are not allowed to just run lights like that"
We were released from the hospital about 7 hours after we got there. My wife didn't break anything, but she has some crazy seatblet bruises.
On the way to the hospital, one of the EMT's said to me "That Volvo probably saved your life... Most cars do do well aboust things like firetrucks..."
Been living on my couch since 1 am Monday morning. Living on percocets and motrin. Gotta get screws and pins on Friday.... But I wanted to get this posted....
Our Volvo and our seatbelts save our lives.

Here she was last month, after her new FSC/Eibach upgrade

.
.
.
.
.
This is the only pic my wife got on-scene. Holy damn... Well, sh!t, glad you got out with just those injuries :-/ Didn't look like much passenger cabin intrusion. Did the impact just throw your leg into something?
Glad we (I?) got to see you at the one meet, briefly, at the least. Is there any chance you won't be replacing that with another Volvo???

It's amazing you are alright, although this is what the car is made for. Glad it wasn't worse because i know the feeling, Almost 10 years ago, i was in an accident with my parents, it didn't feel nice to say the least. I still remember that sound and impact you describe.
get well soon so you can mod another volvo again.

Re: (Rezin S60T5)

Wow. Glad to hear you guys are reasonably ok. Taking on a firetruck is quite the accomplishment for any car, and it looks like your S60 did exactly what it was designed to.
I know what it is like to live through an accident that could have been deadly, but instead of a Volvo I was in a 15 passenger Ford beast of a van. Any other vehicle and we would've been toast.
While it probably hurts like crazy right now, luckily leg injuries heal pretty well and usually don't hinder you later in life as much as some other injuries potentially could have. You guys don't have any back injuries, correct?

Rez sorry to hear about your injuries and your car but VERY happy to hear that you are largely fine.
Its really an amazing vehicle - though it took a huge huge hit there is no, or almost no, deformation of the passenger compartment... absolutely amazing.
Again VERY glad to hear you are ok

Glad to hear that you're okay. It's things like this that show me how much I take my Volvo for granted, and why I got it in the first place. Hope you have a quick recovery.

Wow, that's freakin amazing that two people walked and hopped away from an accident with a fire truck (and I mean this in only the most positive way). Talk about engineering!

Wow that's incredible. I'm glad you and your wife are (somewhat) ok.
I'm REALLY surprised/happy with how well the Volvo took the damage. The safety cage held up extremely well.
Keep us updated on the situation.
