Re: Volvo sailor missing (flybynight)

Kris.....
I saw this a few days ago and wondered what?...if anything, would come out in the mainstream media! What a tragedy!
I have not heard/seen anything from Volvo as to how this will affect the Ocean Race events that are planned for the OSDers who will be attending in Gothenburg.
I am a previous boater ( powerboats)...and I cannot imagine 16 foot waves and those types of conditions especially in that cold water! Sailors are a truly special breed...... I guess it is the connection with the sea that drives them! It would just make logical sense to me that it was WAY to rough to be sailing in those types of conditions...so why do it?

Re: Volvo sailor missing (universityvolvoOSD)

Bob, The seas where the Dutch sailor perished were relatively warm when compared to the seas in the Southern Hemisphere. A sailor loves the beauty of the sea no matter what size waves. The Volvo 70s are beautiful machines, capable of mastering seas much higher than 16 feet.

Re: Volvo sailor missing (bobigski)

bobigski.....
Like I said earlier...
Sailors are a truly special breed...... I guess it is the connection with the sea that drives them!
I grew up on the coast in Fla....and lived on a local lake here in NC for 8 years. I love to be on the water.....it's just sad that this tragedy occured....just to provide a sporting event . I feel the same way when a race driver looses a life! I know it is a career that the participant chosses and that they are aware of the dangers...but it is still sad.
You must be a sailor eh? I do understand the love affair you guys have with the sea ....put your spinnaker up and catch a full wind my friend!
