For the first time ever a Volvo S60 race car won an international motorsport competition: Heinz-Josef Bermes and Jörg Seidel drove the Mühlner Motorsport prepared car to victory at the 4 hours-race on the old Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Meanwhile the favourites Ulli Andree and Andreas Middendorf on the first Mühlner-Volvo suffered from the weather conditions: Thousands of autumn-leaves had fallen on the track and incidently closed all cooling-ducts of the fastetst of the Volvo pair.
Ulli Andree managed to capture second place in front of the Bermes / Seidel-S60 during a wet qualifying session – only an Audi TT Turbo quattro was faster when the track finally began to dry. During the first race lap Andree´s partner Andy Middendorf managed to get in the leading position only to notice that the water temperatures had risen up to 130° C due to the duct closing leaves. Middendorf cleaned the cooler after he had stopped at the track and returned to the pits to check the engine. After two hours Ulli Andree took over the overheated Volvo 5-cylinder, and he also had to stop twice to clean the cooling ducts from the leaves – a phenomenon that many competitors suffered from likewise.
After that the S60 ran perfectly reliable but was two laps down on the leaders. Nevertheless Andree kept pushing, managed to do the fastest lap time during the race and came home a lucky fifth. Meanwhile Bermes / Seidel in the second Volvo racer had put up a lead of more than a 25 km-Nordschleife-lap over the Audi TT Turbo quattro of Peter Bauer and Timo Frings and made the first time ever victory of a Volvo S60 in an international motor-race reality. „We managed to stay on the wet-weather tires for the whole race – even during that long dry period towards the end,“ Jörg Seidel stated. „Congratulations to Dunlop – besides a perfect team-job and a fast, reliable Mühlner-Volvo S60 these tires were the victorious key,“ Heinz-Josef Bermes added.
Team-owner Bernhard Mühlner seemed to be quite confident even prior to the race:“ Within the last four weeks we managed two strong podium finishes – our Volvo S60s and the driver-pairs are strong enough to win here, now. I´m sure it´s just a matter of time...“ How right he was!
