Among mass-market brands, Volvo has ranked highest with drivers for how its technology is experienced in JD Power's Tech Experience Index . Placing ahead of BMW, Cadillac, and Tesla, the Swedish firm ranked high for its wealth of high technology as well as the quality of its tech.

Earning itself 617 (out of a possible 1,000), the Swedes easily beat second-place BMW, which earned just 583 points. Tesla earned 593 points, but its figures were skewed because Tesla doesn’t allow JD Power to poll people in 13 states. 

Either way, the results were promising for Volvo, which was among the earliest adopters of massive infotainment screens. Things are set to get better with Volvo outsourcing its software to Google.

JD Power discovered a few things more generally. Interesting camera angles were among the most favoured technologies, while touch-free gesture controls were widely hated. Another insight is that consumers seem not to trust the semi-autonomous features that will someday lead to autonomous driving (or so automakers hope). According to JD Power people find them “annoying or distracting.” These didn’t hurt Volvo’s performance, though.

The study was based on responses from more than 82,000 owners of new 2020 model-year vehicles who were surveyed after 90 days of ownership.
