My son just bought a 1997 Volvo 850 GLT Turbo and drove it from Chicago to Boston yesterday. In the last 2 hours it started leaking oil to the point where he had to add a couple of quarts to get it in. The Check Engine light came on as he pulled into Boston. Any thoughts. Any recommendations for a good mechanic?
Thanks. You can email me at:

Re: volvo mechanic near boston, ma (maxwat52)

Can't help mechanic wise - don't live in the area.

A few question's though. Did your son buy it from a Volvo dealer or was it a private transaction. Did he have the car inspected? Compression test etc etc? Provide more information on the transaction for SS members immediately - vital in our ability to help... Okay.

You can buy a fluorescent trace dye kit for about $70 or less. Which will highlight the oil leak. From my experience it could be simply a gasket leak or more serious crankshaft/camshaft seal. The UV light will pinpoint if not obvious.

Other SS members will be popping in soon to help.

Re: (TWBarrett)

He did not buy it from a Volvo dealer, but it came from a reputable used car dealer. They only deal in high-end vehicles. Did not have it inspected by an independent mechanic due to time. Trusted the dealer that it was gone over closely, passed a 120 point inspection, and everything worked. Had them put a new timing belt on it before leaving Chicago to get to Boston. Car ran great all the way except the last 100 miles. Started throwing oil. My son is not a mechanic or very mechanically inclined so he just kept adding oil as needed to get home. Most he had to add was 2 quarts. Engine light came on about 10 miles from home. Took it to a mechanic yesterday who told him he needed a new turbocharger and seals in the engine needed to be replaced. Well over $2000 bill. Smoke is coming out of the tail pipe and oil is everywhere on the engine. He's getting a second opinion. I talked to a local mechanic who said things like that just happen and even having it looked at by a mechanic before buying it might not have discovered a problem. Used, as is, high miles means somethings gonna break soon.
