Re: Volvo Luxury Cars (Steph11)

I seriously doubt you will see any movement by Volvo in that market segment.....it has never been a corp. objective to get "too far" from the mainstream of offering a practical, safe, and mid-priced European vehicle.
The most "luxurious" model to date has been the S80 Premier........and there are not that many of those around. I have heard that ther e may be an XC90 Premier version.....but again...I doubt many will be built.
That's just my opinion............

Re: Volvo Luxury Cars (universityvolvoOSD)

Hi Bob,
Just finished reading the current Rolling edition, and I'm puzzled why Volvo is 'thinking' about dropping the S60 version (if that's just a thought and not a reality). I think the S60 has been the bread and butter model that volvo has been selling for years, albeit the style hasn't changed much. The new model which I've seen here at Swedespeed looks like a smoother viersion style wise, but time will tell.
Wadda you think?
Newie
Re: Volvo Luxury Cars (newie)

Newie............

Regarding the S60......the 07 models are already set for production in Sweden...no major changes that I am aware of....other than DSTC added as astd feature.
From there....I don't think there has been any "final" decision made as to exactly what or when any change will be made to the 60 series. It is evident that overall the S60 was and still is a sucess for Volvo, but it is definitely in line for a makeover....My guess would be to upgrade electronics and some int/ext styling.
I don't think anyone can say for certain what changes will be made......but I cannot see Volvo "dropping" the line....unless there is something coming down the road that I am completely unaware of......which could happen Since Ford bought Volvo the guys in Sweden don't check with me anymore ............unless it's about an OSD
All jokes aside......I think Volvo is looking at all the options regarding model upgrades and changes. This is a very rapidly changing market! Fuel options...engine options...technolocigal advances that are way ahead of what the industry can incorporate into design and production. Volvo has never been a co. to take huge risks...so don't look for anything too far from the "middle of the road". Personally....I think an engine upgrade...interior change..slight ext style change...and a major electronics upgrade (sound sys,, i-pod, blue tooth, nav, etc) would do the trick! Keep th eprice in teh mid-upper $30's and keep the folks at the factory in Ghent busy!

Re: Volvo Luxury Cars (McDonald)

Hi Max,
I justgot badk from China a month or so ago, and let me tell you that Buicks are selling like hotcakes over there! We rode around one day in a Buick miknivan, and that was just fine.
I think that Volvo will do OK over there, considering what the Chinese have to offer as any competition. The boys in Ghent will be kept busy enough building cars for the Am. market.
From my perspective I think that Ford has enough problems on their own not to try and change Volvo's so it looks 'American' in style. Quite the opposite, I think. I think that Volvo's stylists have figured out how to tweak the designs of various models so they still look un-box like! I just wish the C30 would become a r eality sooner then later. I know Volvo doesn't like to push the envelope....the big question is do they know how to seal one??!!
Thanks for all your great imput.
Newie

Hey newie,
Glad you had fun in China.
Volvo's styling will change somewhat. The new head of styling came over from Mercedes and he is itching to get going.
The XC50 is going to be his first car.

They believe in good quality, good performance and safety for a reasonable price. They like the European feel and quality w/o the cost or status symbol. Volvo buyers are low profile...for the most part.

Re: Volvo Luxury Cars (VolvoMax)

I don't think it's so much a case of can't compete. I'm sure that if the money were available they could pull something off. It's not what volvo is about and arguably it's very small market and very crowded already.

Re: Volvo Luxury Cars (newie)

Buicks sell there because they're built there. I bet you saw a BUTTLOAD of VWs and Audis (and local badged versions of the VWs) as they have a factory there as well.
During my trips to Shanghai and Beijing over the past year I've only seen a small handful of Volvos and BMWs (and a slightly larger number of Mercedes.)
The key to success in China is going to be building a factory there - PERIOD. My mind might be playing tricks on me but I thought I read a few months ago that Volvo was planning on building a factory there for local market cars?
