Volvo Car USA partnered with tennis legend Stan Smith to help raise money for kids in need at the 2018 Hilton Head Island Concours d'Elegance.

The pair teamed up with artist Amiri Farris, Pixar designers Jay Ward and Jay Shuster, and Volvo's own head of design Robin Page. The Jays are best known for work on Cars and Wall-E respectively, and Page took over as Senior VP, Design, in 2017. Before that he was responsible for the interior of the Bentley limo belonging to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Each turned Adidas Stan Smith tennis shoes into artwork inspired by the XC40 compact luxury crossover.

Why shoes? Partly because Smith, a Hilton Head Island resident, was at the event signing his new book Some People Think I'm a Shoe. Partly because Volvo designers already use footwear to show the styling intent of their cars. The company says that the 90 series are represented by the classic Oxford. A suede brogue for the 60 series, and a white sneaker for the 40s. The event raised $10,000.
