Well, I attended the noon Fire & Ice drive at Fed Ex field in DC today. (Saw Micheal (Towerymt there).
The event is cool. There were no XC90s, but there was an S60 Challenge car. You can sit in it, but they aren't driving it.
Hot laps are performed by two drivers in some spaceball equipped S60 T-5s. There's also a driving course where you can drive pretty hard if you don't knock over cones in either an automatic S60 T-5, S80 T-6 or S80 executive.
On display are one of each Volvo except the XC90, all in silver. Inside the tent is a 75th anniversary car and another S60 with a bike and bike rack.
At the end they give you a khaki Musto/Volvo Ocean Race baseball cap which is kind of nice.
It's worth driving in. I think some more people from the site are going out tomorrow. Have fun. They also told me to tell my friends who might be interested, so I'm telling you guys. The dates are listed in our Resources/Calendar section and the times are on their own website which is linked there.

You guys had all the fun while I was back in N. Potomac area getting tailgated by this group of A/S4 guys doing a reckless caravan at highspeed near my neighborhood.
Of course, I wasn't in the C70...or I'd have some fun with them...but probably not on that road. Speed limit was 35, and I was going a bit more 40s and they were tailgating me pretty closely. Not exactly the smartest thing to do...
If you know which crowd it was..let me know, I'd like to pass on few messages to them. It was definitely not cool to drive like that.

And then "something" happens and you are...powerless? I cannot forget the 2nd night right after I got my ECU upgrade and decided ti leave my demo at home...worked late and it was about 10:45om or so when on a totally deserted highway (on the way home) this moron with a 330 Ci cut me off as I was merging...I can't tell you enough times how badly I spanked him...Also, he must have had a Steptronic car or he was a total idiot.
But, two nights ago, I just left work and...I had my demo (V40), I stop at a red light and this white Jetta pulls right next to me, sounds kinda loud and the two guys next to me keep looking at me, I am thinking "here we go again, Gosh darn it, where is my T5"? I was mentally screaming for light turns green, they let me go (I just took off normally as I had a feeling I would be ridiculed) and, of course, once I am about 2-car lengths I hear the VolvoWannabe engine going amok and he just blows by me, I read "NEUSPEED" exhaust and stickers all over the rear of the car...anyway, that's when I wish I had my T5 because if I did I would be

and I would have made them look like

Yannis

Well I got back from the Fire and Ice thing today, and I had a BLAST! Drove the S60 2.4T and AWD first, then went over to drive the T5 and S80s. I was killing the S60 T5 (autos only) around the course. There was one cool guy who was at the beginning of the course, because he seemed pretty interested in cars and wasn't a dork like most of the other AMCI guys there. Anyway, it was like a cone-lined autoX course, and I was tossin that thing all over the place. Smokin tires and everything. Then we went for the hot laps in the S60s, and wow, those guys were good. We were doing 4 wheel (e-brake induced) drits at like 40-50 mph...freakin sweet. All in all a lot of fun, and the hat they gave us was pretty cool.
Rob

I saw one of the black S60s in a really nice slide on a fast left hand turn. I wish I had brought my camera with the 70-210 zoom. I might have to check out the next one.
I thought they said the S60 T5 had a manual, but I really wasn't paying close attention when they introduced the 3 cars (S60T5, S80T6, S80 Exec.).
The demonstration where they rocked an S60 with opposite corners off the ground while opening and closing the doors was pretty cool. That car definitely has a stiff chassis, and the doors still make that solid sound when closing like the older cars.
I wasn't really impressed by the safety glass demonstration. Comparing a BMW side window to a Volvo side window, the Volvo one is laminated like a windshield so it shatters but stays together. The BMW shatters in to many small chunks like most windows. The Volvo window broke on the first hit with a large hammer, while the BMW window took 3 swings before it gave in. The Volvo window looked like it broke much easier, and I bet it's a lot more expensive. And if the car is every submerged in water, I hope the doors are unlocked or the window is down.
At one of the tents there was a board up that listed specs of the S60 2.4T and the S60 2.4T AWD. The listed weight for each car was IDENTICAL. How can that be possible?

The idea is how long does it take to open a hole through that window and according to a demonstration I have seen, it can take close to 34+ seconds, which is pretty respectable.
As far as being trapped, according to info from Volvo, the glass can be pushed from inside very easily so you can get out.

Yannis

Anyone of going again this weekend? My cousin and I will probably drop by the event after we install that MOMO Jet steering wheel on his 240.
Can't wait to drive with that steering wheel on the car. I have friends ask me.."WHY putting a racing steering wheel in a 240??" And I just told them, "Why not? I already have a Recaro seat. "

I wasn't trying to dispute the safety benefit of the Volvo window, although it may have sounded that way. I was just saying that it looked weaker initially, so perhaps the chances of accidental window breaking would increase.
If this is such a great idea, why hasn't it been widely used before? The guy who did the demonstration hit the window 3 times in 3 different spots. I was thinking that someone could hit the upper corner of the window 3-4 times to break through the glass and laminate, then pull and peel the window out. Since you said it can be pushed out easily from the inside, I would expect it to be much quicker to pull the window out rather than try to bash it in.

I went on Saturday morning which was the first "showing". They had a few kinks to work out, such as doing a better narration of the S60AWD ramp demo, but overall it was a very well produced event. The glass demo I saw was impressive.
Of course the driving was the best part. Really enjoyed working the T5 and T6. The difference in handling characteristics through the cone course was strking. I was sloshing the T-6 much more than the T5, which made me wonder if it was so smart of them to have both there... it's obviously much more noticeable (the handling) when you're comparing 2 vehicles.
Maybe they would have been better off with the 40 series instead of the 80....but I suspect the marketing data made that determination. There were people of all ages participating, and a good mix of men and women.

Yeah it has been quite awhile since i've been on here. I've been busy getting the 242 back into shape, as I haven't had the time to work on it the past few months. My most recent editions are Bilsteins, and a rebuilt turbo from turbo city using a 55 trim compressor, from a 740 I think. Definately made a noticeable difference, very worth it for the $300 spent. I'll be there on the 8th (sat)12pm time slot. Let me get your # again and i'll give you call later in the week.
Andy
84 242 turbo

Yeah, count me in for Saturday around 230. Kai, does this mean we get to find that blue BMW 540 who was revving by us at the red light? Man he didn't know how much that light saved him from total humiliation.
Anyway, maybe not so reckless this time, I mean my car is stock. Well, I guess it's a good thing you were so far ahead, I don't want that can to flame out on my front bumper See ya there!!!

I guess I'll be up there again this saturday. I'd like try the "hot lap" one since I'm not old enough to drive the cars.
Kai, if you want to see my pics from Carlisle, remind me once we're there (you're going Sat., right?)

Let's try to see if the other guy Dave850R would like to join us. But for now the attendees from SS on this Sat. event are: RatedR850, c70pusher, towerymt, Mark, and I.
Since Phill said that he will make it up here by 2:30...maybe we should all sign up for the 3 o'clock session?
Let me know what you guys think.

Yeah the Z28 is sitting now, I've got a bad miss, sounds like its comming from the valvetrain. But before that I ran a [email protected] with a 2.09 60" with 2 burnt wires. The week before I ran a [email protected] with a 2.33 60" so in good running condition with a decent 60" I should be good for high 12's.I'm pretty much open on Sat 12 or 3. Which ever works for everyone else. Keep in touch so we can all ensure that we can get reservations at the same time.

Andy

changed mind, not going. It sounds like a glorified ride and drive. If it was closer i.e. Philly, we would but just doesn't seem worth it to travel 3 hours to drive cars I drive on a day to day basis.
I do hope that everyone that attends has a great time, though!
