My father took his 850 in to the dealer to have his evaporator and heater core replaced, and he went to pick it up today only to discover that the dealer had really screwed up. Apparently when they were testing the car after having replaced both parts, they had failed to put the expansion tank cap back on, and when they came back to look at the car steam was coming up from under the hood. They only admitted to this after telling my father that he needed a new radiator(the "old" nissens one is less then two years old) and fan, even though they admit the fan was running for two hours last night without issue, and again for another hour this morning. The dealer claims that they looked at the headgasket, and are sure that they didn't destroy the engine. I told my father to make them write out that if anything is indeed wrong with the engine(which I had installed last Fall), that they would pay for a new engine and the installation of said engine. I am less then pleased right now, but will keep the board updated as I get more information.

Modified by 1sciroccofahrer at 8:02 PM 3-29-2006

Re: Volvo dealership problems..................... (1sciroccofahrer)

My father just rang to let me know that the dealer is going to install the new radiator and fan, and the car should be done tomorrow. We shall see if they(being the dealer) make my father pay for the radiator and fan. Thanks for letting me vent

Hmm, was this Smythe Volvo by any chance...or maybe Palo Alto Volvo?
Smythe would not shock me but P.A would.
Cheers,
Prospero

Re: Volvo dealership problems..................... (Prospero)

The dealer is actually in Southern California. Once my father has possesion of the car I will elucidate further. I have been suffering from acute stress since yesterday afternoon when I became cognizant of what had occured Perhaps ringing Volvo of America might be a good idea once this is "resolved." Have a splendid day one and all

Re: Volvo dealership problems..................... (Prospero)

Had a bad run-in with Smythe, did you Prospero? I used to hear good things about them, but that's really changed a lot lately... I took a car to them once and won't bother again. I've heard similar about the dealer in Santa Cruz.
I'm wondering if anyone's had any experience with Putnam up on the peninsula? McKevitt in San Leandro has been stellar (and even won a customer satisfaction thing from Volvo, which I was glad to hear they got the recognition from), but in case I need someone closer in a pinch, you know?
ps - I'd definitely give Volvo a call. Things are so polarized with dealers... some are great, some are terrible.. and there's only one way to shift the balance! My VCOA magazine listed a Volvo customer service # in the back in the dealer section: 1 800 458 1552 or 1 800 426 4785.

Really a long story but case and point...I'd not do business with them in any regard. Used cars, parts, or service were a bunch of liars and liked to take advantage of any situation. So, don't trust them. If you need service or parts...I would trust Vern at Volpar in Santa Clara with my first born child (or even my car)
Corporate Volvo knows that they have bad dealers...but sometimes I think that they only care if they are profitable and not getting sued... Car savvy people are one in a few hundred, so we're hardly worth them getting excited about.
Cheers,
Prospero

Re: Volvo dealership problems..................... (Prospero)

My parents are driving back up the state tonight, and after I speak with them tomorrow morning, I can give the board a thorough update as to what in fact occured. Thanks again for the positive words, and letting me vent my frustrations. I can't wait for the weekend so that my little Scirocco can get a little attention Cheers

I just hope they didn't damage it to where you can't tell now, but it raises its ugly head somewhere down the road. Anyway, I always look forward to your posts and your success stories. Have fun with your car this weekend. I just got through spending a day with mine yesterday doing some much needed maintenance. Nothing feels as good as success with something for very few $'s that you know you'll get charged an arm and a leg somewhere else.

Re: (Prospero)

I just returned home from training, and got the latest update from my father in regards to his 850. The Volvo dealership in Cerritos(CA) charged my parents $3500-parts and labour-for the heater core/evaporator/radiator/auxiliary cooling fan. As I stated previously, the car was in for the heater core and evaporator, and only after they ran the car for multiple hours on Tuesday night, and then again on Wednesday morning, with the fan working just fine, did they inform my father that the fan no longer worked, and after a "burp" was heard coming from the car did they notice that the radiator(which is a Nissens, and less than two years old) was leaking. Either way, they charged my parents for the radiator and fan. When my parents picked up the car yesteray evening, they drove about half a mile when they realized that the A/C wasn't working, and they smelled coolant. They drove back to the dealership, and it appears that they(being the dealer) "forgot" to install some sensor(which I will be able to identify when I see the invoice this evening), even though they had charged my parents for it. They had also filled the expansion tank up all the way to the cap, and coolant was being released from the cap. So, after installing the sensor, the dealership tech took out enough coolant so that it was inbetween the max. and min. in the overflow tank. Being the intelligent genuises that they are over there at the dealership, the mechanic took the cap off the expansion tank when the engine was still hot, and coolant flew all over the engine(again). On a positive note, they did steam the engine for free, and the car is now safely back in my parent's garage. My father said that the tech who worked on the car was very upfront about the mishaps that occured while working on the car, but the dealership refused to accept responsibility for the radiator and fan. I know it will be impossible to prove that it was indeed the dealers fault, but the whole operation seems a little suspect to me. My parents spoke with a woman at the Cerritos dealership who had a S70, and she told my parents of various issues she had with the dealership and their tendancy to "find" problems with her Volvo. She is now in the process of dumping her Volvo, and sticking with Lexus. I think my next step is to contact Volvo of America, and let them know about the apparent contuining issues which various customers have had with Cerritos Volvo, and my parent's experience in particular. Thanks again to everyone on the board, and I hope everyone has a most enjoyable weekend

Re: (1sciroccofahrer)

Well they better not deal with Lexus of Cerritos, bad store. A friend of mine who tried to make a deal with them had a VERY BAD experience.
I saw the copies of the emails, they just plain lied to him and refused to honor a deal, even though it was in writing
JRL

Maybe the water in Cerritos is bad Seriously though, I am just glad that my parents have their car back, and hopefully will never have to deal with the Cerritos Volvo dealership ever again. I am going to ring Volvo of America on Monday morning, and ensure that they are cognizant of what had transpired. Enjoy the weekend

True to form, now multiple lights in the instrument cluster are out My parents are going to take the 850 in to the local dealer on Monday and have them conduct the various tests necessary to ensure that there was no damage done to the engine at the Volvo dealership in Southern California. A little insurance policy I guess All I need now is for the sun to make an appearance in California
