My parents took the 850 in this morning to have the Sacramento Volvo dealer independently verify that that the engine had not suffered damage from the events that had transpired last week at the Volvo dealership in Southern California, and low and behold when the car was in the repair bay and the cooling fan was no longer working and coolant spewed out from the expansion tank cap. The service manager is going to get back to my parents sometime this afternoon, but they are saying that they will need to replace (the less then one week old) fan and relay, and want to install a new engine coolant temperature sensor. I am also having them take a look at the radiator which was also installed last week. All of the parts that were installed last week, and the labour, are under warranty, so my parents should not see any cost from that. Why it is so difficult for the Volvo dealers to get my parents 850 in a proper running order, I do not know, but this is really just starting to annoy me greatly. Hopefully I will have something positive to report later this evening. Take care one and all

Re: Volvo dealership problems PART II (1sciroccofahrer)

I just checked in with my mom, who asked the service manager (at my request) if the check engine light came on when the coolant came out this morning, and the service manager said no. Knowing that, I am going on the assumption that the ECT is fine-as if it were faulty, it should turn on the check engine light. The dealer is installing the new fan as I write, and I will get an update hopefully in the very near future. I am also instructed my mom to have the dealer replace the t-stat(on the dealer's tab), regardless if it was stuck or not. Gotta love the Volvo dealers

I remember you saying that they heard a burp in the system. This is not good. What I know is on the newer aluminium engines that they need to have the cooling system blead of any air that is trapped in there. There should be a valve some where they can open to bleed this air out. That valve should be located on the top of the thermostat housing. No? I know on my Oldsmobile that I had to bleed the air out of it. This may not have been done to your parents car. I hope this is the issue. I hope I am not wrong....If there is air trapped in a plastic radiator that air can super heat and make the raidator leak and rupture weak coolant hoses. ( seen this in motion on a Mitsubishi Eclipse)
What say?

Re: (DVolvoguy777)

I can only hope that the Volvo techs know about bleeding the system. Heck, I knew it when I installed a new t-stat and on my sister's Civic I just got off the phone with the Volvo dealership in Cerritos after I saw on the invoice that they put EXCH next to the radiator while charging $377, and in no way did my parents authorize a rebuilt radiator to be installed. The service manager claims that it was a mistake, and they are going to send me an new invoice which reflects that. Why it is so difficult to do things proper the first time, I will never know

I am glad that I lived so close to Orange County Volvo in Garden Grove. They are on Garden Grove Blvd and Brookhurst. They never did me wrong when I had my 242...or any of my other Volvos.
What is the deal with them? Are their techs ASE?

Re: (DVolvoguy777)

I would hope that the techs at the dealer are ASE certified, but who knows these days. The dealer is going to ring my parents at noon to inform them about the status of their car, so hopefully this will be resolved today.
p.s. I am still waiting on the Volvo dealer in Cerritos to send my parents a fax clearly stating that the radiator that they installed was indeed brand new, and not a rebuilt one. Seeing as how my father would never consent to a rebuilt radiator being installed, and how the dealer never asked them if they wanted a rebuilt one, and how they charged my parents full retail($377), why they would put exhange on the invoice, I do not know. The fun continues

Re: (1sciroccofahrer)

Turns out that the ground wire for the fan was loose Why it is that the Volvo dealership in Cerritos didn't catch it, I don't know. I will be ringing them tomorrow to inquire. The dealership here in Sacramento checked the engine out, and ran necessary tests, and said that the engine was in great shape, and that no damage was done while the dealership in Cerritos were working on it. I guess only time will tell.
p.s. I rang Volvo of America this afternoon because on the box, and as well as on the invoice, it said EXCH. I discovered that Volvo no longer sells "brand new" radiators for the 850, at least not for the '96 850, but rather "remanufactures" them for the pricey total of $377.01. Why this is the case, the person at Volvo could not tell me. Either way, there is a one year warranty on the radiator, and we shall see how it goes.
p.p.s. The dealer also checked the ECT, and it was in perfect condition.
Have a wonderful week, and thank again for all the help
