But some some features, like sunroofs and leather upholstery, that were standard on some 2002 cars are options on the 2003 models.
The new prices were announced to dealers on Friday. Volvo's 2003 models were expected to start arriving in showrooms the week of Sept. 30. Prices were unchanged for some models.
Volvo will advertise lower starting prices, but with options, the company does not expect transaction prices to fall significantly, said Walt Langley, vice president of product marketing and distribution.
Volvo especially wants to keep the new XC90 sport-utility from stealing sales of the bread-and-butter V70 wagon and the XC70 Cross Country. Loaded with standard features, the price of the 2002 XC70 Cross Country is a lot higher than the bigger, newer XC90, which goes on sale in November.
The 2003 XC90 will start at $34,010. For 2002, the least expensive XC70 Cross Country is $37,475. For 2003, the least expensive XC70 Cross Country is now $34,530, reflecting the fact that leather and sunroof are now optional. Prices include delivery of $660 for 2003 and $625 for 2002 models.
Volvo's U.S. sales were off 16.2 percent through August, to 74,716. The company, based in Irvine, Calif., has a target of 200,000 units in the United States by 2004 compared to a record 125,673 in 2001.

-Drew

That is great news! I swear the velour in my wife's S80 beats the leather hands down, especially in the hot desert sun when the leather fries your thighs off. Finally, a smart move by Volvo.
Well, I think so. My wife does, too. Now only if they'd get rid of that #$%&*@!!!! vinyl on the base S60 T5 seats that fry thighs in the sun worse than the leather. Shmucks. Those hurt, guys. Someone at Volvo had their head where the sun don't shine.

I'll count my blessings... it's not snowing at our elevation yet (rain, still), but it is only 1000ft up from my house. Glad I got the heated seats.

 2003 V70 prices GREATLY reduced!!!
I just calculated all 2003 prices for my sales force...I am totally amazed how much the V70 prices have been reduced.
For example:
MSRP on a V70 base with auto tranny and Climate package is $30,025!!! (incl. destination charge)
MSRP on a V70 2.4T w/ Climate & Premium packages is $34,620!
MSRP on an XC70 w/ Premium & Touring packages is...$37,920!!!
MSRP on a V70 T5 w/ Geartronic, Climate & Premium packages is $38,220!
This is a HUGE price reduction. I guess all wagon lovers will have to "thank" the XC90 for this big break!

Yannis
