Volvo Coolant - Old vs. New

Just recently changed my radiator to an all aluminum one from DO88, and they say they will only warranty their product if you use genuine Volvo coolant. So I went down to the dealership and got a gallon to mix with distilled water. The coolant was pure blue and had a nice smell to it. The bottle looked like this -

Yesterday I changed my turbo and in the process had to let out a good bit of the coolant so I went back to the dealership and picked up another bottle of coolant. The parts guy said "here's one with a fancy new bottle" and I asked if it was the same stuff as the old and he said yes. The bottle looked like this -

When I opened the bottle I noticed right away that it was more of a blue-green than a pure blue. It also smelled different, more like traditional antifreeze/coolant than the other Volvo coolant I had bought.

I'm slightly worried about mixing the two obviously different formulas but since they are both "Genuine Volvo" at least I've got my warranty issues covered. Should I drain and fill it all with the new stuff? Or should I try to find another bottle of the old formula? Does anyone know anything about the new vs. old and what the reasons were for the switch? Thanks!

Volvo coolant, blue, green, or in the newer case blue-green, is all phosphate free HOAT coolant. Chemically the same, just different color. It should be fine.

IIRC, the Volvo stuff is the same chemically as Pentosin NF coolant.

Not arguing that they are compatible, but I really don't think they're chemically the same. They smell nothing alike, and my nose is no chromatograph but that has to indicate some kind of difference in formulation doesn't it?

Ya know what? I would be concerned too.I certainly would not go on some counter sales guy as an expert and if the bottles don't have an analysis on them, just get the same stuff.
After all the stuff you did on that car, whats another $25bucks.I would probably wake up in the middle of the night having nightmares about my heater core and **** if it was not all the same coolant.
That's what I'm thinking I'll do, but now the question is should I go with the new stuff or try to source a bottle of the old tried and true formula? Or go with Pentosin NF if it's identical to the old formula. I wonder if DO88 would count that as non-oem coolant, even if it's the same?

Its completely compatible. If it wasn't I would know. I comb over all new bulletins for service, And parts every single day.
Very good to know. That makes me feel a lot better about the 600 mile trip I'm about to have to take. I'm still thinking I might drain and fill with all the same stuff, just for peace of mind.

Still wondering if anyone knows why they changed the formula? Was it just a better deal from a different supplier or is there an actual performance improvement in the new formula? On the bottle it says "A new high quality coolant for modern petrol and diesel engines, to meet increased requirements for high mileage with low friction engines." But what does the coolant have to do with mileage, or engine friction?

It's Volvo labeled, I'd think that should be good enough from a warranty standpoint, especially if the part# matches. I'm sure like any other manufacture, Volvo or their supplier (Pentosin?) changes formula periodically... I personally wouldn't be too concerned as long as it'll be compatible with the first container you put in.

I would check with DO88, in some states if they require a specific brand to maintain warranty they have to provide said item. Most likely it will have to meet or exceed Volvo specifications to maintain warranty. Just a thought as the stealership charges way to much for pretty much everything.
