Most people on the road today probably don't realize that Volvo, the safety brand, invented the one safety mechanism used more often than any other--the three-point safety belt. A majority of that group, too, probably doesn't realize that on August 13, 2009, that simple belt that's now a part of our daily lives, so important to road safety that wearing them is enforced by law, by policemen standing on corners in the hot sun just to catch offenders, celebrates its fiftieth birthday. Since its introduction, this bit of technology has saved over one million lives. So from Swedespeed to Volvo, we thank you. We thank you for being a leader in safety back in 1959 and still today, with the XC60's City Safety being the latest in a long timeline of live-saving features and technologies. And we thank Nils Bohlin, the ex-aviation engineer personally responsible for this day we're able to celebrate. Below is a press release from Volvo about seat belts, followed by a few timelines of Volvo accomplishments in the world of safety engineering.
http://www.swedespeed.com/news....html

Re: Volvo Celebrates 50th Birthday of Three-Point Seatbelt ([email protected])

I guess I hould have posted this here first instead of in the thread in News and Rumours:
Here's an interesting question on the CMSHG chat forum:

Quote »

I have no doubt that Volvo produced the first three point belt, but does anyone remember a Volvo Two point belt…?

My 1959 544 had a diagonal chest belt, from the drivers side pillar across to the hook on the tunnel. I added a standard lap belt, as I suspected a sudden stop might slide me under the chest belt… (sadly, I tested the belt system, by hitting a sizable rock, during an autocross…)

Darryl

BTW, the autocross he mentioned was a real autocross held in places such as friendly farmer's fields and such, not the sissy pavement "autocross" we have these days.
