Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, today revealed the long-awaited new XC60 premium SUV at the Geneva Motor Show.

The new car replaces Volvo's highly-successful original XC60, which in the nine years since its launch became the bestselling premium mid-sized SUV in Europe with nearly a million units sold globally. The XC60 today represents around 30 per cent of Volvo's total global sales.

"We have a strong heritage in designing stylish and dynamic SUVs that offer the latest in technology. The new XC60 will be no exception. It's the perfect car for an active lifestyle, and it represents the next step in our transformation plan," said Håkan Samuelsson, President and Chief Executive, Volvo Car Group.

New comfort and safety technology
The new XC60, one of the safest cars ever made, is fully-loaded with new technology. Steer Assist has been added to the ground-breaking City Safety system. A new safety system called Oncoming Lane Mitigation uses steer assist to help mitigate head-on collisions, while Volvo's Blind Spot Indication System (BLIS) now uses Steer Assist functionality to reduce the risk of lane-changing collisions.

"We have focused on building a car that can deliver pleasure to all of your senses - from a commanding view of the road ahead in a beautifully appointed and calm cabin, to a safe, inspired and confident ride," said Henrik Green, Senior Vice President Product & Quality at Volvo Car Group. "We've paid particular attention to making life easier for our customers by providing them with the creature comforts and services that take the hassle out of everyday life."

Pilot Assist, Volvo's advanced semi-autonomous driver assistance system, which takes care of steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130 km/h, is available in the new XC60 as an option.

Performance
The new XC60 offers Volvo's award-winning T8 Twin Engine petrol plug-in hybrid at the top of the powertrain range, delivering 407 hp and acceleration from 0-100 Km in just 5.3 seconds.

Image

"We have a wide range of powertrains. The new XC60 will launch with the diesel D4 engine at 190 hp and the D5 with PowerPulse technology delivering 235 hp. We also have the petrol-powered T5 delivering 254 hp and the T6, which with both turbo and superchargers attached, delivers 320 hp and 400 Nm of torque," added Henrik Green.

But it is not just under the hood that the new XC60 delivers healthy performance. The new CleanZone four-zone climate system removes harmful pollutants and particles from outside the cabin to deliver Scandinavian-fresh air on the inside.

Volvo Cars' driver infotainment and connected services offer, Sensus, and the Volvo On Call app both receive a graphical update with improved usability. As in the 90 Series cars, smartphone integration with CarPlay and Android Auto is also available.

Sculpted feel
"The XC60 is an SUV not designed to look down on others but to drive. The exterior has an athletic sculpture with a subtle, timeless quality. The interior is a masterful composition of well-resolved architecture, beautiful materials and the very latest technology - all perfectly blended together. The XC60 provides a true Scandinavian experience which will make our customers feel special," said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design at Volvo Car Group.

My wife and I really like this, but there is no mention of trunk space (did it get bigger or smaller?). The release of this just made our decision harder for replacing our current XC60...a good problem to have I suppose :D

#4 ·
Unfortunately, the cargo area is slightly narrower between the wheel wells (~3 Inches) and very slightly less deep (1/2 Inch) compared to the current XC60.

The cargo area is slightly taller though, it seems. And overall volume is slightly increased, as is rear leg space according to the measurements.

Bummer about the trunk space getting narrower between the wheel wells and losing some depth. I was hoping for at least a bit deeper, the current width/height haven't been an issue for us, but we want something a littler deeper. I guess it's the XC90 for us, lol!

Very nice looking vehicle inside and out. I am interested in seeing more about the changes made to Sensus compared to what's in my FE.

The T8 was announced and it's supposed to have around 407hp and a low 5sec 0-60mph time.

#14 ·
I'm assuming on Bursting Blue and Passion Red will be the RD only colors; unless they do a Dynamic Trim offering Passion Red like they did for the S60/V60.

@bappy you would do an overseas delivery. On a purchase in the first many months it would give you the best discounts as well.

I am wondering what is under the rear passanger seats. Seems to be a pull out looking thing for kids toys ect? Or is it because those look to be either extendable lower leg areas or booster seats?

Need some help from someone who has been in one.

Any word on the T8's battery range? Motor trend is reporting 30 miles, but that smacks of the (fantasy) European testing cycle.

Motor Trend Review (lots of pics):

http://www.motortrend.com/cars/volvo/xc60/2018/2018-volvo-xc60-first-look-review/

Excerpt:

The 2018 XC60 choices include a T5 with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine; T6 with a 2.0-liter both turbo-and supercharged; and the T8 which is expected to increase its electric range to about 30 miles, which would be more than double that of the XC90 T8.

To partially answer my own question, in the Volvo configurator:

Our T8 Twin Engine with plug-in hybrid technology delivers an exhilarating drive with uncompromised efficiency. Combining a high-performance petrol engine and an electric motor, this powertrain allows outstanding highway performance and zero emission commuting - with all-wheel drive capability when needed. Mated to our smooth 8-speed Geartronic™ automatic gearbox with a hand-made Orrefors® crystal gearshifter, the petrol engine drives the front wheels and the electric motor powers the rear wheels, giving instant acceleration and on-demand all-wheel drive. The Pure electric mode prioritises electric drive with a zero emission driving range up to 40 km, ideal for daily commuting. In Hybrid mode, both the electric motor and the petrol engine are utilised to optimise comfort as well as performance and fuel consumption, while the Power mode uses all available power to maximise performance. AWD mode activates full time all-wheel drive for improved traction in slippery conditions, and to facilitate driving on really poor roads at speeds below 40 km/h there's the Off road mode. The compact battery installation at the centre of the car contributes to balanced handling characteristics and doesn't intrude on passenger or load space

So, 40km (25 miles), which is undoubtedly the Euro drive cycle so more like 16-18 miles EPA....of course, that's the exact same description they have for the XC90 so who knows?!?!

I wonder if that will be available once they start production in South Carolina?
MotorTrend's web page article reports XC60 production in South Carolina
is expected late 2018. Book early :)

(Pick-up at the factory in South Carolina could be fun, too. )

Maybe if you are from Alaska you would want to do south carolina, from Jersey nah, plus at that point you are just buying it in another state.

The S60 is going to be the first car produced at SC factory.. which will be late next year. I think they got their cars wrong on that one.

What a stunning car! I hope they offer all of the colors shown in the US. Pine Grey looks to have some green flake in it, finally. And Fusion Red is a great replacement for Flamenco. Maple brown looks amazing too. Great job Volvo.

Yeah, I think you're right that the Chengdu production is designated for the Asian markets. That jibes with the end of the sentence in Autoweek's article: "Volvo's factory in Chengdu, central China, will start output of the SUV in autumn and with sales set to begin early next year." The end doesn't really make sense since USA sales will supposedly already be underway by then. It must be saying that the production from Chengdu will go on sale in China/Asia in 2018.

Love the looks, athletic yet elegant, contemporary and confident without being too avant-garde; a perfect execution of the harmonious evolution of the first generation with the XC90! The interior front fascia is also the best among the SPA cars to date...should build on thesales success of the previous model.

Effing stunning! Probably the best looking Volvo to date! Bravo Volvo!

This car really is well done. Honestly, our 2012 XC60 has aged very well and still looks better than most of its competition. The only less than exciting styling element is the window behind the c-pillar, but beyond that, its great and fixes the least exciting design element of our generation (the nose - which was not bad, but not as good looking as other views).

The available 4C active Chassis + air suspension and longer wheelbase (over 3" longer) should go a long way to improving ride quality over the current generation, and let's face it - you get a knockout XC90 interior in a smaller size inside.

As an important aside, the active chassis and air suspension only shows up as an option for the R-Design on the international configurator (it does not show as available for the Inscription or Momentum...options may be different for the U.S. cars of course). The R-design also shows to have the sport chassis by default vs. "dynamic" for the others:

Active chassis with air suspension

Our chassis with air suspension and Four-C technology makes your Volvo even more dynamic and refined. Automatically maintaining ride height and providing superior comfort and handling, it allows you to adapt the chassis to your preferences. Our Four-C technology monitors the car, road and driver 500 times per second, simultaneously adjusting each shock absorber to current road and driving conditions. Together with our self-adapting air suspension for each wheel, this maximises both ride comfort and driving pleasure. Different drive modes increase versatility in all road and weather conditions. In Comfort mode, the chassis is tuned for maximum comfort. At highway speeds, the air suspension automatically lowers the car to reduce drag and further enhance high-speed stability. Eco mode lowers the car, even more at higher speeds for improved aerodynamics and lower fuel consumption. Dynamic mode enhances the car's sporty characteristics with firmer, more dynamic suspension while lowering the car. And to maximise your capability on rough roads, the Off road mode increases ground clearance by 40 mm at lower speeds. You can also create your own personal settings in the Individual mode. And to make it easier to get in and out of the car, you can easily lower the parked car. When you have to load or unload heavy items or attach a trailer to the tow bar, you can lower the rear of the car by pushing a button inside the load area.

Now we begin the 6+ month wait for them to hit dealer lots in the state

Pete - thanks for the youtube link to the crash (and other) video. Impressive.

I don't like the crease/dent on the side. Otherwise, awesome.

Like the overall shape & stance. Fusion red looks great.

What bugs me is Volvo got the headlight shape right on S90 & V90, I expect XC90 will catch up at midlife refresh. Not really digging the XC60's squinty headlights. Why jack with it once you've finally got it right?

It is pretty but a lot more carryover in style than I expected. I suppose that is a tribute to the continuing success of the current generation.

Ground clearance reduced by about a half inch which is a bummer but digestible.

I think the plugin hybrid strategy could be a little confused though. Having moved from a plugin hybrid to XC60 2.5 years ago, I can say most plugin hybrid investors are more concerned about efficiency than added HP. It will be a tough sell against the T6 Turbo/Super charger edition which will cost about a-year-of college-tuition less (based on my last check of XC90 plugin prices).

2015.5 lease up at end of November. Decisions decisions...

Thanks for the link. I'm pretty relieved now, couldn't readily find a source for ground clearance.

I agree, .5" reduction is ok but any more would be a bad move.
