Volvo Cars’ global sales up 3.2 per cent, strong growth in the US and Europe

• Global retail sales of 30,195 cars in August
•United States up 18.3 per cent
•Strong demand for Volvo’s XC-carlines

Volvo Cars posted a 3.2 per cent increase in retail sales for the month of August, selling 30,195 cars globally. Europe and the US market were the growth drivers, boosted by continued high demand for Volvo’s new XC90 model as well as the company’s other XC-carlines.

Retail sales in Europe as a whole were up by 6.5 per cent to a total of 12,867 cars, led by Sweden where Volvo reported a 19.2 per cent increase. The V40 is the most sold Volvo model in Europe, followed by the Volvo XC60.

The United States reported 5,870 retail sales which represents a 18.3 per cent increase versus the same month last year. The growth was driven mainly by the new Volvo XC90 as well as the XC60 model, which was the best-selling Volvo model.

Sales in China reached 5,574 cars, where the locally produced Volvo XC60 and S60L continue to be the best selling models. The decline in China reflects the general slowdown in the Chinese economy which has affected the overall car market.

“I am pleased to see how our strengthened product offer led by the new XC90 is boosting the US market for Volvo Cars”, said Alain Visser, Senior Vice President Marketing, Sales and Customer Service at Volvo Cars. “Thanks to our strong presence in all three key regions, I expect continued global growth for this year”.

Putting aside the shocking sales performance of the XC60, only the V40 is doing well. Even the XC90 sales are dismal - be it the recall or supply constraint. The rest of the lineup's sales are absolutely rubbish; if you remove the 3 models I've mentioned above Volvo's annual sales would dip below 200.000 cars! The new models cant come soon enough. Personally I would like to see a new S60 asap as this is where the meat of the market is, and I may be in the market for one...

Agree with you that 60 series are needed, and 40 series (in US). They will be the biggest boost to sales. However they apparently cannot roll out multiple series in parallel so far. Bear with it for couple of years though.

Well this is real picture in my point of view

S60 (all variants): 2014 42877 units, 2015 40885 units
V60 (all variants): 2014 39629 units, 2015 36973 units
V40 (all variants): 2014 67691 units, 2015 64999 units
V70/XC70: 2014 35256 units, 2015 35794

Except S80 all other models are selling well. We have to take into account, that V70/XC70 are dinosaurs and S60/V60 will be completely renewed in two years.

Volvo needs an awesome S60 and a stunning XC40.

These would be perfect volume models and profit makers.

XC90 and S90 are not gonna cut it they are on the expensive side.

They need good volume.

With the 10.0% sales decline in China, and 18.3% growth in the US, the US is once again Volvo's largest national market.

And let's not forget a little distortion in the US market's Aug 2014 and Aug 2015 comparisons. From the "The Truth About Cars" Website;

"Over the last few years, August figures reported by automakers have actually included sales from the Labour Day weekend, at least part of which includes September. August 2015 sales figures do not. Thus, we're looking at totals achieved during a shorter span – and without the big Labour Day weekend sales – than we were at this time a year ago. On a daily sales rate basis, the American auto industry was up 3.2% in August 2015."

That makes Volvo's numbers look even better than the actual +18.3% growth. The overall actual US market in Aug showed a -0.6% sales decline because of the absence of a Labor day weekend.

The last few years have been terrible for volvo, so comparing with last years' numbers is not right, just look at competing premium brands such as Audi, Bmw and MB and you will see that volvo sales is almost irrelevant

It is not relevant to compare the overall sales with the German 3. Comparison of competing models is more relevant. But more relevant is the growth of Volvo year over year. No one can reach their peak sales in one year before new production lines are ready.

@GoVolvo--It looks like the XC60 workhorse and the new XC90 (despite the panel/air curtain recall) are pulling the cart for Volvo. The S60 is in decline--it was the XC60 and S60 that were the pulling the cart for Volvo for far too long. You have to think that the XC60 will start a decline in sales next year, and hopefully, the V90, V90CC, and the S90 will take up that slack, just before the arrival of the new XC60 and S60 in 2017. It looks like the new models will arrive in the nick of time.

Sure, it is right...Last year, all the negative nellies were here and throwing stones at Volvo for being down vs. the prior year. Cannot have it both ways, my friend...

It does seem like, no matter what the good news is, there are naysayers.

The point I was trying to make was that the model line up is in urgent need of replacement, and the priority should be the s60 because firstly the segment is huge, secondly the current s60 sales are dismal. Had the xc60 sales not been increasing overall sales would have declined this year.,I doubt anybody at Volvo were expecting this.

Last year Volvo achieved sales record. This year It seems It will be even better. Compared to germans? Volvo sells one car on three german (only one brand off course). In Europe for example Volvo XC60 is the best selling model in its class (yes, Volvo sells more XC60 than Audi Q5/X3,...) and that is absolutely not irrelevant.
And all that after all problems with Ford, and creating all new strategy. When Volvo will complete all model range till 2018/2019 you will see, the ratio will be one to two or close to that, between Volvo and german brand, which is really good job for Volvo, considering Volvo sells only 334000 unit worldwide in 2009, when was ratio between Volvo and german brand one to four or worse.

It is not relevant to compare the overall sales with the German 3. Comparison of competing models is more relevant. But more relevant is the growth of Volvo year over year. No one can reach their peak sales in one year before new production lines are ready.
So you should compare model by model and see the huge difference...

YoY increase is tiny until now, so I dont see your point?

Did you ever get anyone to take that 500 euros bet you were offering up ... for the XC90 to outsell the Q7 in 2015? Wish I could have gotten that action. (Of course, I bet on the Seahawks. Thanks Pete!)

Well in 2015 It is nit fair for Audi. It goes on sale in september on the other hand Volvo is selling xc90 from march (i think). Let move that play in 2016, full year for both models.
