Got very bad news today from my military sales rep, that Volvo has effectively cancelled the 75th Anniversary Edition car and all orders for it due to technical problems with, of all things, the headphones on the Rear Entertainment DVD. I was told my order would be honored if I chose to select an Executive S80, but the August delivery is off, and the soonest possible FDC pickup would be OCTOBER.
Don't think AUDI would do this to me, but FORD has done it to me in the past with an order for a Super Coupe Thunderbird. Don't know how I will go with this news, as I was really enthused for this AE version, my very first Volvo ever. Maybe my only one, but never delivered...... Rick

I understand your disappointment, I would have felt the same. But I found out that honesty is the best policy. Isn't it better this way rather than you not having received a car that was up to par? Then you would be living with an ongoing problem and you be even angrier! As I have already let you know, the Executive is a much better car especially if they are offering you one for the same price you were going to pay for the AE. Plus the extra 2" of leg room in the rear and the extra wide opening of the rear doors. And resale value shoud be better for an Executive than an AE.
Afterall, it is not like Volvo cancelled your order in order to make room for someone else!
Hope you stay with Volvo and take them up on the offer for the 2003 Executive!
Regards,
Yannis

Huh, I hadn't heard this yet. What makes the car most attractive to you? Is it the entertainment system? If so, you may want to consider the XC90 when it arrives in the fall. It'll have a pretty comprehensive system also, but it'll be single screen, popdown from the roof rather than in the seat backs.

Yannis, I am taking your advice, and that of my Volvo sales rep in Schweinfurt, and have reordered the Executive version of the S80. It will be the 2003 model, and that is one of the positives that helped me make my decision. Haven't a clue what the wheels on it will look like. Do you know what is planned for the 2003 model? I was really looking forward to Goeteborg in August, so now it's October for the FDC delivery. Colder for sure! But I'm still enthused by this car, and look forward to becoming a Volvo driver. BTW, I'm attending the Intensive Driver Training Course near Wuerzburg on 29 June and excited about that! Rick

Good luck with the new car. The US S80 Executives I saw last week at the Volvo Fire & Ice Event had polished Arrakis wheels on it. Don't know if that helps or not as they were 2002 models.

How about the AE S80's wheel?
That's the wheel that the S60 Race car at Fire&Ice had, right?

quote:
Originally posted by [email protected]:
Good luck with the new car. ARRRRGGGGG
Still don't know which way I'll go. I had a hard enough time making a decision the first time. I need something to drive yesterday Oh well life goes on.
Glen

Glen, have you made a decision on going with the Executive? What was the reason the rep there gave you for the cancellation of the AE cars? Still think it is crazy to cancel our orders due to faulty headphones! Couldn't they have put in wired phones instead and worked out the bugs on the wireless ones? Oh well. It's a done deal for us as customers. Now I'll just have to wait until October. Rick

Hey guys. Apparently there are S80 AE modles to be had. A dealer in San Antonio says he has one in port waiting to get delivered. I've also heard that Volvo will only produce 300 instead of the original 500.
I went to my dealer today to say thanks for the 2003 Exec offer but "no thanks" and the General manager was out of town meeting with Volvo about this cancelation issue.
There may be hope!?

I'm still in the ?????? phase but tomorrow I'll decide. Maybe the BMW 530i that I drove before or a Dodge. I hate this I thought all the thinking was done and I could enjoy the antisipation and now....... It went flat. Real flat. All they told me is a problem with the DVD system. Oh well
Glen

Much more room upfront, more leg room in the rear, more overall shoulder room, trunk room, folding rear seats and when it comes to performance...Bye-bye! . Plus, the DVD player, TV monitor, fridge, etc...
Yannis

???
I haven't heard anything about the CXL for the S80 Anniversary. My vehicle, ordered back in FEB 02 is due here in Germany this week; I even received the Shipping of origin document. I guess that because they are limiting the amount to less than 500 S80 anniversary edition, they have had to CXL orders.

I will put up some pictures here shortly for all to see.
Dan

First, a question on Yannis. On the Executive, do the back seats fold down? I read in Car & Driver I think that the extra room in the rear was won by taking it from the folding seats, in other words, by making them immobile. Great if the Execs rear seats fold down so I can load skis through, or have my Springer Spaniel in the trunk in the Volvo dog enclosure!
On Dan, congrats on getting your car soon. Definitely sounds like you're one of the few with an AE if you've received the shipping document. That would really have been a hammer had they not honored your order from February! Keep us informed and do post a pic when you get it. If I recall, it is being delivered to your dealer in Hanau?
Cheers, Rick

Hey Everybody
I've gone the 2003 route as the 2002 T6 offer ($1500 rebate) really wasn't much of an offer IMHO. My dealer is giving me a new S80 2.9 to drive. I will pick it up the first week in July when it gets delivered from the factory. Still a bit disapointed about the AE. CONGRATS DAN! But "2003" sounds nice. I want pictures Dan.....
Glen

I cant see the comparison with a 530 but for those that do, more power to you. The S80 has a much more powerful engine, but the rest of the car cant tame it so it is not as useful. I loved my S80, but you would need to do some mods to get it to handle anywhere near a 5 series which is one of the best handling sedans on the road.

I loved the 530 and almost bought it until I drove the T6. I felt more at home and loved the way it moved. The 2.9 I drove first didn't stop me from looking but the T6 did. As far as handling... hey it's not a Bimmer but in more ways then not, that's a good thing. This wasn't necessarily a rational decision but one that makes me smile
Glen

Drive a turbocharged car and that "high" can never be replaced or erased out of your memory "chip" that is implanted in your brain...NEVER! Nothing beats the rush or the way of power delivery that only a turbocharged engine can manage. Plus the xtra room does not hurt!
Yannis
