Spotted this online...
Automotive News Europe : Nov. 5, 2001

TOKYO - Volvo wants to extend its product range above the current high-end S80 sedan.

In an interview at the Tokyo auto show, Volvo President and CEO Hans-Olov Olsson said Volvo is looking at launching vehicles that would cost more than the S80. A top-of-the-range S80 retails for about $45,000 (49,750 euros).
"If we are going to grow, we have to look at how can we expand," Olsson said. "Where we are with the S40 and V40 as entry level cars and the S80 as the top, the lineup is between $25,000 and $45,000. To grow, we have to look at the segments above and below where we are competing."
Extending the reach of Volvo's products upward would test the strength of the Volvo brand.
In addition, the Swedish carmaker is planning to move downmarket by developing a premium small car to rival the Mercedes-Benz A class and Audi A2.
"There is always debate about whether Volvo should take on the luxury sedans, or whether that's the territory of somebody else," Olsson said. "Don't misunderstand me, we are not aiming for the Mercedes S class or something. We have to find new definitions, we have to have imagination, and we have to challenge ourselves because we are in a saturated market. We have to take the risk and see if we can attract the same people in another direction."
Volvo is in the middle of an aggressive product development campaign that will bring five new or redesigned product lines to market in the next five years. The automaker hopes to expand its annual global sales from 420,000 to about 600,000 units.
In addition to the new premium entries, Volvo will launch a new sport-utility based on the Adventure Concept Car; a redesign of the S40 and V40; and a new version of the C70 coupe and convertible.

Good find! It looks like the possibility still exists that Volvo could have a RWD S100 model based off of the next Jaguar S-Type/Lincoln LS platform. That would make perfect sense.
The introductions seem to be:
New SUV (V90 XC?)
New S60R/V70R AWD
New S40/V50 (V50 XC?)
New Hatch (H30/V30?)
New C70 Coupe/Convertible (C50/C40?)
New Premium (S100?)
-Drew

If you look up wagon in the dictonary, there is a picture of a Volvo...give us a large wagon. Its what we are known for, just because people need alot of space doesn't mean they want a ACC, SUV, AAV, or whatever you want to call it.

This is great. People, around my area at least, view Volvo as just another car company. They don't understand how great they actually are, or how I see them. I am glad volvo is moving up and downmarket. This might thin them out a little but at least they will make their presence known throughout most of the car industry. I was a little unpleased to hear Volvo was making some lower market cars because well people will see the lower end models and see people in higher end such as the s80 and think its nothing special. too bad everyone can't drive a volvo, then they will understand. Sorry for rambling on. Thats my $.2

Personally, I liked when they had the 40/70/80 setup with S and V versions of both and room to grow the lineup (never really wanting to go above 90).
I understand why they did the current alternating setup to be different from the German luxo brands, but at the same time it makes it hard to expand into more model ranges.
Like you said, do you make the next C a C70 or a C60 if it is the size of the S60?
I think, if they aren't planning on doing a larger wagon than the V70, and this is a hybrid, it should be the V90 XC to emphasize the hybridness of it all.
What gets confusing is that if they do a rwd sedan above the 80, you can't call it the S10 because GM owns that name on pickups. So perhaps you call it the S90, but it has little to do with the V90 or XC90 which is derived from the S80's platform right? So do you call it the V80XC. Maybe that's the best route. That's also leave room for a hot-ute to compete with the M-class AMG called the V80 R or V90 R.

Or, they could just call them X50, X70, and X90.
-Drew
