I know that this is a Volvo board, but I am in the market for another car. I am looking at a Red 1997 Volvo 850R automatic that is totally STOCK and a 1999-2000 Saab Viggen 5 speed, this too is totally STOCK. The Viggen will be cost a few thousand more as it is newer. I know that both of these cars can be made to be very fast close to 300 crank hp which is enough to give 90% of the cars out there a good run. Has anyone actually driven both cars and maybe compared the too as build quality, comfort, handling, etc. ?? I think they both look really nice cars. I would like to hear everyones opinion and please try not to be biased, but if you are biased I would still like to hear your opinions too. God Bless.

Re: Volvo 850R or Saab Viggen ????? (JDELUNA)

Personally, i'd go for the 850R.
The benefits of the viggen are that you can get it in a 5 speed, and a 2 door is also available. The only thing is that they push around 19 psi while stock, and have incredible torque steer, also i'm not a fan of the shift gate, the throws feel forced and just don't mesh well.
The 850R on the other hand is a 4 door automatic only, and while it may not seem as sporty while stock, can easily come out to destroy the viggen. It really is a matter of taste and either way you're going to come out with a great car.
If it's warranty issues that you're worried about, you can always get the extended warranty through any dealership that goes up to 2003 and 100K miles.
Hope this helps,
David

Re: Volvo 850R or Saab Viggen ????? (fhdt5r)

David,

Thanks for your honest reply. I have not driven both cars yet as they are both about 2-4 hours each away from me. I know the Viggen is famous for the torque steer but how is it on the 850R ?? I would assume it too would have it as it is pushing some high HP too through the front wheels, or does the 850R come with a limited slip ???? Also for the 850R with a ECU upgrade, etc. what kind of boost is it making ??? Also how strong is the 850R's auto tranny ??? WIll it hold up to the 300 HP and Torque ??? Again thanks for everyones opinion and help. God Bless.

There's always a C70 HPT. That'll get you the two door and in coupe form, you can still undercut the Viggen but get the benefit of the newer 70-series dash that tends to be a little less prone to creaks.

I, personally, do not like the 9-3 body and if that is the only way you can get it, then it is the 850R. If it is a 9-5 Viggen and a 2000 model, then it is tough not to go with the 9-5. Newer car, manual (very important in my book), car is sportier and I think slightly better looking than the R. Tough one, my friend! If you chip the 850R, you got one heck of fighting machine there. But it is boxier and it has a slushbox!
Good luck!
Yannis

Re: Volvo 850R or Saab Viggen ????? (JDELUNA)

i assume ur talking about the 9-3 viggen, which has an inline 4 boosted up to 20 psi. the 850R does come with limited slip; unfortunately, that particular option is only available in europe with the 850r manual models. stateside auto models don't have limited slip. most 850r aftermarket ecu's will run between 14 and 18 psi. tme.com believes anything over 300 hp and u'r asking for trouble from the inline-5. the tranny seems to be fairly durable, as is the engine, just be reasonable with the boost.
the saab 9-3 viggen still has a solid rear axle...the 850 has a semi-independent rear suspension...both have their quirks...blame the swedes. the 850 is probably safer than a 9-3.
i'd say go have a nice test drive and trust ur butt . make sure neither has no annoying rattles that'r hard to pinpoint. as for saab mods...u'd have to go to a saab forum for more details.

It's probably ultimately up to which car you like the most. I hear the torque steer in those Viggans is really heavy.

Thanks for everyone's opinions >>>>>>>

How is the torque steer on the 850R ??? I would think it would have some or even a lot as 240hp thru the front wheels !!!! I love the look of the Viggen as I love hatchbacks and it has a unique look, plus I would only get the 2 door coupe for the Viggen. But I also like the stealth look of the 850R as fast 4 door sedan. Ahhhh decisions decisions !!!! Which one is more reliable ????

torque steer isn't too bad straightline. but when u try to pull out of a corner too hard...u'll be fighting with the steering wheel. with my old 16" michelin grand touring tires, pilot hx, they'd just squeal in complaint and leave a huge plume of smoke. 17" stickier tires i have and have had, pzero assym and s-02 pp, really bite hard and fight u.
what fwd doesn't do that? oh well....
