Re: Vinyl Dye dashboard? (jdsr917)

I soaked the dash in dye, same blue as my interior... and failed. It just wouldn't adhere for me.

That dash dye is junk... If you realllly want to DIY your dash (I wouldn't recommend it) try Krylon Fusion. That stuff sticks to anything and is quite durable.

I tried that stuff. You have to let it dry for A LONG TIME or be like me and let it sit for 12 hours touch it and its still wet but once it really does dry it is amazing !!!

Its just universal plastic dye
DO NOT SAND if your going to use fusion on our interior plastic parts... it will not adhere, for my experience at least

We tried this weird dash specific one on some vinyl pieces of a POS car with disastrous results

I have some plans regarding a similar idea, still researching it though...I will pass on whatever good and bad info I get.
An idea I have been kicking around is removing the dash from the car and spraying it with plastidip. In case you don't know what that is, it is one of the most amazing inventions ever and the VW/Mini crowds (among others) love using it to black out or color certain parts of their cars. The best part is it is mostly reversible if you don't like it since it just peels off like a plastic covering.
I was going to spray it on, give it a good amount of thickness, then paint over the plastidip in the color of my choice. It wouldn't be super durable if you were attacking it with sharp objects, but I don't ever touch my dash so I think it would be fine...plastidip can be painted pretty easily from my research and small projects I've done with it. I can show you at the meet a small example.

plastidip is amazing. I use it on everything.
The dash is too flexible, youre better off covering it in alcantara and doing some cool stitching around the cluster hump

FWIW SEM Products produces automotive-grade flexible vinyl spray paint known as Color Coat. Professional autobody shops use Color Coat to repair, restore and otherwise recolor flexible automotive-grade vinyl and other plastic surfaces with factory-quality results.
Color Coat is available to the DIYer through autobody supply shops and can be custom color matched to any interior color.
That said I've used Color Coat in the past with great results and it's leagues better than competing vinyl paints which may be best intended for plastic lawn furniture.
