I've been using DICE/VIDA '13a on a Windows XP machine and it's been working fine. Currently my newest vehicle is a 2013. I'm considering purchasing a '17 S60. Will I just need a newer VIDA software or will I have to upgrade my computer/OS as well? Thanks!

I believe that the 2014D is the last VIDA that did not require an active subscription to run. So for newer VIDA releases, you will also need an active subscription. Current subscription prices can be found here: https://www.volvotechinfo.com/index.cfm?event=info.subscriptions.main

Currently, subscriptions are about $50 for 3 days of access if you want to be able to run diagnostics and about $70 for 3 days of access if you want to be able to download and install software updates (note that buying the software downloads is extra, on top of the $70 for the 3 days of VIDA access). Annual subscriptions are just absurd unless you're independently wealthy or run a repair shop where you're using it enough to justify the several thousand dollar annual expense.

Like zenmervolt said, 2014D won't work on your 2017.

It will work for diagnostics, but it will not be able to download/install software updates and I have heard, but not verified, that it also cannot program keys.
If you can not download/purchase software, you can not program remotes/keys.

New vida requires windows 10 professional as well. They stopped supporting older windows. We upper level techs at my work bought new laptops because of this.

Schucks! So what options do DIYers like myself have to do simpler tasks like brake jobs where you need to place the brakes in 'service mode'? Are there other diagnostic units that can do that and what do you recommend?

I have not done any downloads myself yet so can't vouch for it, but several in other forums (e.g. S40/V50) have posted that they bought a 3 day subscription, downloaded software for various things and programmed keys with their DiCE and VIDA 2014D.

Interesting. Still, the most current VIDA software is free with the subscription, so once you're going that route you might as well just go with the newest VIDA software too I'd think. Especially since the newer VIDA versions work just fine on Windows 10 (from what I've heard) and you don't need the whole virtual machine setup that most people have with VIDA 2014D.

I just purchased a 3 days VIDA subscription yesterday and I updated all modules in my S60.
It worked very well with the clone DICE.

I owe a mea culpa. Took the time today to go back through those posts I mentioned and read them more thoroughly. I missed that the guy who was using his clone DICE said he used the 2015 VIDA for the downloads rather than his 2014D pirated version.
