Hi all. I’m relatively new to the Volvo world so please excuse my ignorance on the topic of this thread LOL.
I understand that VIDA is Volvo’s diagnostic tool and it seems that some members of the forum posses this tool in order to perform their own diagnostics without having to go to a dealer. Assuming this is correct, I’m interested in acquiring one myself but need direction on exactly what to get and also what I can expect to pay. I found this ad in a local classifieds but don’t feel comfortable buying something like this blindly. Thoughts?

Vida is the online diagnostic program purchased by subscription at Volvotechinfo.com. Not sure if it's available in Canada. You might hear of Vida 2014d. That is the latest VIDA version that was available on DVD. It was stolen and hacked to work without a subscription and can be found for free on the internet. 2014d can talk to (with a DICE unit) and has info on cars through 2015.

Dice is the interface between the obd port on your car and a usb port on your CPU. Clone example shown below. A factory dice unit is about $600. Clones have been produced and sell for ~$100-200. A "universal" interface that is supposed to work with many car brands is a "j2534" unit. Never used one but they are supposed to work as an interface between the obd port and your cpu.

For 2016+ cars a different interface is used - it's an OBD to ethernet cable.

Hoonk this picture of a DiCE shows a power supply stepdown transformer. When I ordered my DICE it came without a power supply. Can you please take a pic of the underside of this power supply so I can see all the specs, especially whether the center conductor is + or - and the mA value? Thank you

Thank you for the response honk.
So if I understand correctly, the tool in the image is only an interface. I’d have to find 2014d on the internet, download to my PC then purchase the interface tool in order to have VIDA working for me. Correct?

Get VIDA here. It is VMWare, Once installed, VMWare will start Windows 7. Click on Volvo all in one icon to load the VIDA program. The down load is 7.25 GB, Zipped. You will need 7 zip to unzip the 7.25 BG into 28GB unzipped file.
There is more to it than my directions here. Check these 3 sites out for more information.
This is just the Volvo VIDA program. You still need the DICE unit to connect to the car.
This 2014D VIDA will only read up to 2015 model year.
These files and information will not be available forever.

volvodiag.com there's a number of different options, I picked up a DICE unit on ebay for under $100, and paid the $5 fee on volvodiag and have been able to scan all 4 of my volvo's (including a 2016 XC70, there's a hack to that). So depending on your volvo year is the answer to your question. Good luck.

My vehicle is a 2011 XC90 3.2 AWD. My current dilemma is that my laptop computer has Windows 10 pro operating system. It seems like all of the free downloads of 2014D require Windows 7 pro, I did see some great threads on getting it to load on Windows 10 but reading the steps makes my head spin. To say I’m not a computer geek would be a huge understatement and frankly the required steps are way beyond my abilities.

I just installed VIDA for my first time last night. I used virtual box and installed a windows 10 machine on it. Vida installed from within the windows 10 virtual machine easily. Now I just need to find and buy the DICE hardware.

I fantasize about buying a Windows Surface tablet to do more live driving stuff. Probably safer just to keep my eyes on the road and engine temperature gauge and not geek out with that. Also my bluetooth phone OBDII device gives a lot of live data already if I wanted to look at that.

I got it to run on windows 10 fine. Followed the instructions on this site. Did it on a dedicated $200 laptop I bought from BestBuy. Had a copy of Windows 10 on a flash drive and "downgraded" to 10. Got my DICE on ebay a year or so ago for $100, but yeah, prices on those have really gone up lately. Then got a $75 hard case on Amazon to keep it all in when stored around the shop. IMO it's worth it if you have just one Volvo and DIY, but I have 4, plus a few family members cars!

VIDA 2014D_Repack install on Windows 10, any version.

I no longer own that Dice and power supply - but the only time it is needed is when you first attach the DICE unit to the CPU and wait for windows update to find, download and install the USB drivers for it.

If you don't have a power supply you can simply power the DICE unit from your OBD port while windows finds the drivers.

The power supply is not used or needed during normal operation either -

Yes I got a clone DICE with a blue circuit board. I plugged in the USB connector to my computer and it powered up. I was told that the USB should not power up the DICE. I was also informed that no need to connect a power supply except when you're doing a firmware upgrade. One of the problems is upgrading the ICM.

This is who I bought my setup from. The nice thing is that it’s ready to use as soon as you get it.

my app has the p3 model support added for p3 volvos up to roughly 2018, currently doesn't show the repair tabs properlyt for these models but will let you read live data etc and im working on updating the database to work properly with the repair tabs etc

generally for proper volvo diagnostics on actual newer platforms etc you would use vdash or get an actual vida online subscription if possible in your country type thing

I used one of these versions of VIDA 2014D, will I be able to install the optional software such as SWM reload to look at the steering angle?
Your stolen and hacked to work subscription free version of VIDA 2014 - can't connect to Volvo's magic server in the sky for any downloads or software updates.

That is only possible with a subscription to VIDA - purchased at volvotechinfo.com (in the US)

not sure i will keep offering my installer to be fair, most customers are very happy and the few that dont work and i fix are also very happy but sometimes people wont even let me fix things if they go wrong or do random stuff themselves then blame me, for example attached is a customer who decided without me prompting at all to reinstall windows then later complains that they reinstalled windows 😂

you need a good counterfeit DiCE unit or J2354 cable (mongoose or similar)
you need to download the hacked software and related drivers onto your computer with vintage OS or run a virtual machine.
you can find weird versions for free or easiest to pay $5 for the semi supported downloader packages.
I bought the VMWare version with Win 7 for MacOS.

you don't need to use a VIDA $ubscription from Volvo unless you want to use legit software. but you can use the subscription to load modules/software/program keys/activate optional equipment. and that would require a genuine DiCE, if even still available. last I saw I think they were near $1000. might be able to do it with an older quality counterfeit unit.

rather than take a gamble on eBay or Alibaba, I bought some old DiCE units here in the marketplace section that were used but therefore already vetted by a real person. they pop up every few months for $150-200
