On July 11, 2009, TKi Motorsport running their number 322 Volvo S60 Challenge driven by Josh Koropchak and Ricky Marrero, scored a 1st place in class victory, 2nd place overall podium at New Jersey Motorsports Park Lightning circuit. Since the beginning of the year, the team has worked day in and day out to prepare their Volvo.
The beginning of the weekend started off rough for the team. While preparing the car for a one hour practice session on Friday, they noticed an issue with the right rear hub on the car. Forfeiting practice, the team rushed to a local Volvo dealership, where parts were acquired. The car was ready for the event the following day.
When Saturday morning rolled around, Ricky Marrero went out for the practice session. With one session completed, it was now Josh Koropchak's turn to set a flying lap in qualifying. After the 20 minute qualifying session was complete, Josh managed to lock in pole position.
With the drop of the green, Josh was keeping the pace, with his competitors tailing right behind him. With the second lap complete, coming around the last turn, the car suddenly lost all throttle response. Coasting into the pit, the team decided to try to recycle all of the electronics, and the car was back to normal. With the lead cars now a half of a lap in front of him, Josh fought hard and pushed his limits in order to regain the lead. With a little bit of luck, Josh's driving, and their pit strategy, everything paid off, and they re-gained the lead. Maintaining his lead and 1 hour 45 minutes through the race, it was now time for Ricky to take over.
With Ricky now behind the wheel, he was ferociously pacing, in order to maintain the lead. Lap after lap, Ricky was setting consistent lap times. With his years of racing experience, Ricky was well aware of what needed to be done in order to come out on top. With victory less than an hour away, the team could taste victory.
Unfortunately on lap 87, with approximately 45 minutes left, a left front tire blew out at turn 1. Slowly circling around the track to prevent further damage to the car, the crew completed a tire change, and Ricky was back on track. Now third place overall, with limited time remaining, the Volvo S60 Challenge was now fighting for position. With twenty minutes left, the 2nd place car pitted for a splash of fuel. Ricky and the Volvo were now in 2nd place overall, and first in class. On lap 129, the checkered waved, and the TKi team along with Josh and Ricky clinched their class, and 2nd overall.
The team will be at Lime Rock Park on August 7, and August 8. With a website currently under development, and sponsorship proposals being sent out within the week, the team is looking to expand, and plans on a full 2010 season.
