Re: Very loooooooooong 6th gear (sR-71 Blackbird)

The '06 6GT top gear is 0.67:1, and it's fitted with a 3.33:1 final drive. The 6MT is 0.70:1 and 3.77:1. Effective drive ratios are therefore 2.231:1 auto and 2.639:1 manual, about 15% taller gearing for the auto.
Don't complain, you can maybe go faster.
Tom.

which means that if you were able to hit redline, you would be doing about 326km/h or 196mph. WOW!

and lockup is a bad thing?
pardon my ignorance when it comes to speaking in terms of automatics.

No, lock-up is a good thing- just trying to figure out JRL's reference to lock-up and its application in this case.

gotcha
well i guess he was referring to the fact that there was NO slipping occuring and it was infact the true RPM for that speed. i dont know...hes being incognito today

Re: (ljjones)

I would expect the GT transmission to be un lock-up immediately after it does a gear change. You don't drive a manual with the clutch half. The GT should lock up after every gear change.

Especially the POS AW55 in the 04's and 05's. But it is much better than some of the other auto's I've (unfortunately) owned.
Most automatics have lock up torque converters, but many of them are reluctant to lock until pre-set things have happened, such as a minimum speed, a particular gear, and a certain time at cruise.
My old grand cherokee had only one critera for lock up - 50 mph. And you knew it locked. It was a very efficient transmission from that perspective.
The AW55 has funny times that it will lock and not lock. I dont' have enough seat time with it to fully describe it, but it's got some fuzzy logic, and must take into account more parameters than just speed.

Re: (ljjones)

Lock up IS there, just not as noticable in the Aisin Warner box (a good thing)
I was trying to explain to the person that kept rolling his eyes (with the "Duh, OK, so) is that when in lock up the transmission drops a few hundred rpms which is why he (the original poster) was noticing the lower rpms at speed,
that's all folks
