Howdy folks! My '06 (170,000mi) V8 is in need of some transmission work. I think I'll just replace the tranny with a used unit with fewer miles, and I'm curious what years I can get away with. Ideally I'd like to throw in an 08+ to avoid potential valve body issues that seem to be common up to model year 07. My local independent Volvo shop is under the impression that the newer units won't fit due to a change in axle size, but the person I talked to also didn't seem very confident. I haven't been able to find any real info on changes, other than valve body, between 06 and 08+. Do any of you have experience or knowledge that might help?

Thanks in advance!

I'm adding another post to get this to the top so it's not an edit and I'm deleting my old post.

I am mistaken about the transmission fitment- there are two distinct PNs, a pre chassis 367133 (36500941) and a post chassis 367134 (36000844), aligning with a change in axles plus knuckle and hub in that same range so yes, the Indy is correct. Engine wise, the person who did the S80 motor swap has proven that front/rear fitting points are all the same but not so for the transmission and the front drivetrain components.

This is a good site to check for fitment, etc : https://usparts.volvocars.com/Volvo__.html , I clearly should have done so before responding earlier.

Thanks for taking the time to look into this (and sharing how you came to the conclusion). Chassis number is the last 6 digits of VIN, right?

I did a little google searching, and it looks like (based on https://www.epicvin.com/vin/volvo/xc90/2007/yv4cz852271), this change was mid-2007, just like the valve body. So I guess it's unlikely I'll find a donor with the older drive-train and updated valve body.

would this work if the axels for the 2007 + were also used?
