McLaughlin takes second spot on leader board

Volvo S60 driver Scott McLaughlin's emphatic clean sweep at Phillip Island on the weekend has propelled him into second place in the 2016 V8 Supercars championship.

The 22 year-old Volvo-Wilson Security Racing GRM driver dominated the weekend, winning both races, as well as two pole positions, and setting a new lap record for Phillip Island along the way.

McLaughlin now trails Whincup by only 15 points on the drivers' championship ladder.

McLaughlin's biggest challenge came on the opening lap of race seven from Jamie Whincup. Whincup tried an audacious outside pass on McLaughlin but the Volvo S60
driver held firm, refusing to yield, and led the whole race.

Phillip Island has been a strong track for McLaughlin, who has been on the podium each year in the Volvo S60, and won in 2014 as well as the both races this weekend.

"It has been an awesome weekend. The Volvo's pace has been great and this is really something for us to build on during 2016," said McLaughlin.

"2015 was tough, but we've had commitment, and had results along the way, but we just haven't quite had the race pace. Now we've got race pace and we've got our reliability back which is really good."

Volvo sits 4th in the teams championships. James Moffat continues to push his way forward with a 7th placing in race six, after qualifying 8th and a 15th finish in race 7 after qualifying 5th.
