I was just browsing through IPD's classifieds section and noticed something rather interesting.
There are at least 3~4 V70R there for sale, what gives?! I just cannot imagine why so many these people are selling the Rs only few years of ownership. They are seriously very nice cars; especially, they got their own niche market that I just can't figure what other wagon can replace.
I can see the new R due in another year or so might be a rightful substitute, but other than that...at that price, there is nothing else that can come close.
And...NO, the bimmer 3 series wagon is fugly, the R IS much better looking. Maybe 9-5 Aero wagon, but no AWD. S4 Avant?Hmm...too small for comfort.
Well, for those who has the $$$ and been looking for the R wagon, it's a good time.
Kai,
I totally agree with you man! I don't know why these people are selling the cars. They're not error or accident prone cars, really pretty solid performers and great all around cars. In my mind i can't see many other cars out there that can haul the kids to a soccer game, and get them going to 60 mph in under 7 seconds.
The seats are absolutely incredible and the suspension with the awd only helps the feeling of volvo safety and solidity.
SOMEBODY please buy one, you'll never look back. I know my mom will keep her 2000R for a long time.

Ditto the Avant....too slow, even the Allroad at well over $50K with the 2.7TT is too slow; rear drive 540 Bimmer is fast but forget it in a Chicago winter and the back window is sloped so the large mutts cant sit up. The Saab is quirky but fun. The Passat is too slow and mundane. The only thing that can touch it is the newest Audi....S6 and soon to come RS6...but then there is the matter of $60K and up.
The R cars are a popular premium lease item...I think that is the reason that you see so many at times. The 2000 models are 2 year Volvo leases! The only reason I got rid of the 2000R was because I bought a second 2000R with extended warranty. My Silver 2000R is for sale and in excellent condition w/40K)
Fun, fast (esp modified), great cruisers superb sound systems and AWD...I only hope that Volvo will continue the R&D and not only produce another VR but keep up with the industry trend to load up on power and performance even in the Wagon segment. The R is for Riot!

[This message has been edited by TravelingIncognito (edited 04-18-2002).]

TI,
"Avant, too slow"? Did you drive a stock S4 Avant? Go drive it again, just harder.
Speaking from personal ownership experience, the S4 Avant was not too slow. Unless you are coming out of an M3 or M5 for comparision. It felt a tad quicker than any of pre 2000 V70R/T5 or '01 V70 T5 that I test drove. The '01 T5 felt quicker than the '00 R.
The Avant was a blast at Summit Point, how often do you get to see a bright yellow wagon passing a Corvette?
If I were able to do it again, and as soon as I am gainfully employed I will, I would go the V70R or V70 T5 route. The Avant is too small and the extra room outweighs the slight performance advantage.
The V70s definately have a character of their own and that's very appealing. I'm looking forward to the new '03 V70Rs, although the price will probably be in the mid to high 40s.

Much smaller car indeed as you mention.
That is what would make the S6 Avant or RS6 appealing indeed.
The T5 does "feel" faster...my girlfriends S70 T5 pulls like mad when the boost comes up but put a clock to it or look at the speedo and thye actually perform about the same 0-60. The R just pulls with much more composure...probably the AWD and the much less significant torque steer. The T5 feels out of control and if you've ever puched it down an on ramp on entry it CAN get out of control.
I am afraid 300 hp in the 03 R will not suffice...the competition is over the 400 hp mark already. But I will keep an open mind....but then again I like the breadbox looks of the pre 2001!!! (sorry Yannis)
Keeping them under control! Although I must tell you that the new V70s are less "violent" in their reaction than their older counterparts!
No prob as far as you liking more the "breadbox looks"...to each his own. The older style V70s do have a certain attractiveness to them, perhaps a bit sportier. The new V70s, IMO, are sleeker and definitely more aerodynamic especially if you dress them up with the right wheels and a rear spoiler!
Let's put it this way; when I had my Black 1998 V70R, I received perhaps 2-3 nice comments on "how nice the car looks"...I have now had my 2001 Red V70T5 for almost the same time as I had owned the 1998 R and I don't remember how many times people have approached me at gas stations, rolled down their windows at stop lights and even an 18-wheeler truck driver called me through my open sunroof (at a red light) and told me that he could not believe that my car was a...Volvo! But as I wrote earlier, neauty is in the eyes of the beholder, right?
Yannis

We had an A6 2.8 avant as a service loaner. It was nice smooth ride but I agree it is slow.
One characteristic I noticed when test driving the 98 V70 T5 was the low end felt softer compared to our '99 GLT with the LPT. But once up and running it was a blast. I guess that's a characteristic of the HPT vs LPT.
Volvo should make a bold statement with the '03R and standout from the pack.

Stock...boost comes up closer to 3000 to start and peaks about 4000.
The Audi 2.7T uses Twin Turbos to combat the inevitable turbo lag. Maybe Volvo could consider the use of twins???

Add that to the HPT explosion and you'd have some real fun.

DP is about all I have left for the powerplant then its the suspension (sways and strut brace) I picked up Titan 17" wheels with Pzero asymetrico I haven't rec'vd them yet. The car is seriously fast...the exhaust and wastegate really helped it breathe like it wears one of those nose strips!!! Fun stuff...Jim
