Hi,

We bought a '98 v70R a couple of weeks ago and we love it.
We live in central PA and we get our share of snow/sleet so we are
thinking about putting snow tires in it.

The car came with the factory 16" meteor wheels. One question that
we have is whether the snow tires can/should be 15" or 16"? We have
found contradictory information in the volvo car manuals ('98 and '99)
so we are quite confused.

The other question that we have is this: we also own an '87 volvo
740 Turbo wagon (soon to be sold) that has 15" volvo alloy wheels in it.
If 15" are ok, would these wheels fit in the V70R?

Thanks in advance for the information

Re: v70R wheel size for snow tires (oicrey)

the owner's manual says 15s for snow. I'm not sure if my 2000 R can use 15s or not.

Tire Rack has some specials on wheels and tires, you could get a set of 15" steel wheels with tires, balanced and ready to install. I may get a set of 16s that way, incase I upgrade my brakes in the future.

I'm going with 17" snows, cuz its all about looking good! I've had 'minus- one' snows before and I really wasn't happy with the way it looked. So it may be more expensive, but if you're buying new tires and wheels anyways, what's another $50/wheel.

On the bad side, yeah, 215's are like big snowboards on the white stuff, 195's would give you a little better traction and ability to go 'through' snow, but like all things, there are trade-offs!

quote:

the V70R with snows is not much fun to drive on ice/ in snow. it's impossible to slide/skid the car. you won't be able to do donuts in the parking lot. the darn thing tracks like a train; stops on a dime and gives you a nickel change. the only fun thing about this car with snows on ice is flooring it at every green light--no wheelspin--the car just takes off like a rocket, leaving everything--and i mean everything--even snowmobiles--behind in a whiteout.

That sounds like a lot of fun! I can't wait to get up there in my girlfriend's S60 AWD http://********************/smile/emsmile.gif http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Re: v70R wheel size for snow tires (petew)

Hi,

The car came with brand new tires (Michelin Pilot MMXZR (?) 205/55/WR16)
We had a chance http://********************/smile/emsad.gif to try them with snow and ice and it was not nice.
Thus why we were thinking of having two sets of wheels/tires ... just not sure which size to buy. One manual ( I think it is the '98) says using 16,
other year ('99) says using 15 (Or I have them mixed up???)

We still have not taken our own pictures, but here there are some that the dealer sent us (we bought the car through auto trader)

Thanks for the help

PS: I'm not sure how to include pictures on the message like you did ... how is it done?

Tavia,

The pictures you linked to on that website you listed are linked to your C: drive, which will not work.

To show pictures here, you need to use the tags. Put the address of the image between two [img] tags.

If you need any help on how to get this all to work, drop me a line through email. [IMG]http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Nice!

Was the dual exhaust removed before you got it? The cut out is there for the tip so I'd take that to mean someone at somepoint had the dual exhaust on it.

Saffron is growing on me, the more I see it the more I kinda like it.

Yes, the cut out was already taken off when we got it. I'm not sure if
it ever had the dual exhaust or not. We got all the records (it belonged to
Volvo America and its certified) but there is no mention of a dual exhaust.

For me the tan interior makes the whole difference with the saffron color.

Re: v70R wheel size for snow tires (oicrey)

I was told buy Volvo Canada that my 99 V70 R AWD can only accept 16" wheels. I have 302mm front rotors and the calipers are mounted higher. I'm not sure what the deal is with the 98 or 2000. Measure your rotors and you'll find out. 302mm 16" wheels 288mm 15" wheels. It is possible that many R's have had the wrong rotors installed as replacements and are now running 288mm.

I picked up a set of 16" steelies for snow tires just to be safe and incase I ever upgrade the brakes. Good info, I'll have to measure to see what I've got and if the dealer replaces the rotors make sure they install the correct ones.

Excellent choice...... http://********************/smile/emthup.gif http://********************/smile/emthup.gif http://********************/smile/emthup.gif Great color combo. I upgraded to 17" wheels and tires on our '98 V70R for the summer and plan to go with the stock 16" R wheels with the HP, All Season tires this winter. Last winter in Northern VA. the Z rated sneakers were like roller skates at the ice rink, http://********************/smile/emthdown.gif when it got cold enough for anything to stick/freeze.

Does anyone have a good reccomendation for the 16" HP, All Season tire?
