In the 2004-2007 V70R's, is the third seat option available as a dealer installed option? i.e. if I found an R but it didn't have that option, is it still possible to get it through a dealer or does it have to come with the car from factory?

I found a used on on Ebay. They pop up every once in a while. I think I paid about $750 shipped. The install took about 2-3 hours (without installing inside lock mechanism). It works well and folds away invisibly. My 6 year old loves riding back there.
I bought one from erievovo and installed it in my VR. It works great for the little ones. Erie is very reasonable their used seats are ~630 shipped. My swedish parts still has a few new ones for sale, but your going to pay about $1200. That's why I went with used. And the third row doesn't really get used that much, so the used from erievovo looks pretty good.
Adam

If that is correct, I would definitely go to the effort/expense to have that installed, since in an emergency the third row passengers would have to climb into the 2nd row of the car to get out...not a good idea.

It was dropped entirely for 06 and 07. I had one installed in our 06 from the dealer and it cost $1500 even, including labor, and yes that included the door handle. I agree that it would be a bad idea to install it without the handle. I thought about selling it before we turned the car in at the end of the lease, but I had no idea how to uninstall it and didn't feel like going through all the trouble.
That being said, it was a great option to have and I can't believe Volvo dropped it entirely from the V70 line. I may have considered a new XC at the end of our R lease if they had offered it. We didn't use it much, but when we needed it, it was very convenient.
OT but how do you like your 4 door GTI? I'm thinking I may find a low-mileage used one in a couple years once the R gets up to 100k or so. I had an '86 GTI that I drove on the Autobahn in Germany while I was stationed there...many fond memories...
This GTI is my favorite car I've ever owned, and now it's even more awesome with my APR Flash, and some Bilstein coil-overs. I'm worried about the build quality, but at only $25,000, I don't mind if I have to put a little money into it. Besides, anything that breaks becomes an immediate candidate for an upgrade (or is it an excuse?).
I'd say that if you get a used one, get a good warranty, and be prepared to be a little frustrated (based on the stuff I read on VW Vortex). That being said, mine has been fine so far. I've learned to live with a few funny noises, and the AC is a little weak. Also, the trunk is pretty small (the price of a short overhang I guess). It only has 22K miles, it's garaged, and driven gently most of the time. Mods are reasonably cheap, and plentiful, but the car is a blast to drive even in pure stock form.
I got a chance to see the new MK VI this past weekend, and I can't say it's an improvement in any way. I personally think it's bland, and it looks better in pictures than it does in person.
Maybe I'll be ready to sell mine in a few years, but I doubt it. If you're ever in the Philly area, let me know. I'll be happy to let you drive it.
We have it on our 04 as a factory option. Very usefull if you have kids. We can fit my wife and I and 5 kids (our two daughters and 3 of their friends), and pull our boat with no problem. Makes for an unusual sight at the lake unloading all those people and putting a boat in with a V70R.
