Will be trading in my 2003 a4 avant over the next couple of months. The short list for a replacement is an a4 Avant 3.2, s4 Avant, Saab 9-3 Sport-Combi Aero, and the V70R; all would be MT.
I live on hilly private road that requires driving through 3-6" of snow a few times a year (before the plow comes). I also drive on some gravel/dirt roads. Driving carefully, I have not had any issues with my avant, which does have the sport package (lowered suspension). Sounds like the clearance may be an isssue with the V70R; how have other folks made out in snow? (I would get dedicated snow tires).
Any other comments on cars to look at or cars on the short list? Have not test driven any yet.
Thx

Re: V70R Snow/Ground Clearance? (Parker21)

I've driven on paved roads in up to 7 inches with no issues. I sometimes take the car up a steep dirt road that has a mean center hump in it (left/right sides of the road are a foot or two lower than the center). by keeping one set of wheels as close as possible to the center, I've only scraped bottom on it once....so as long as you're careful, you should be ok.
For what it's worth, the ONLY thing I've really wished for on my R is an adjustable height suspension (ala Allroad). THe rest of the car is simply perfect for me (size, power, comfort, utility, etc, etc)...coming from an A4, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, especially in the power and space/utility categories.

Re: V70R Snow/Ground Clearance? (icebiker)

The snow you will experience in CT will not be an issue. I have had my V70 R for 3 winters at Lake Tahoe and use it every day. Two winters ago, we had 22 feet of snow in 10 days. This past New Years I was at Mammoth for the 10 feet in 30 hours storm. This March we had over 30 feet of snow. I ski every weekend, and travel for work every week day. Never been stuck or turtled. I have even backed out of my parking space at the ski area on a blizzard day when the plow put a big berm behind me. No worries. I have driven through snow so deep that the snow was forced up over the windshield, I had to look out the side windows to see where I was on the road. If you can drive in snow, you will not have any issues. oclv

When I went up to the snow last year in my 2005 V70R I had a lot of fun pulling off the road to wait for my friend who had chains on his RWD truck. I would drive through the big tuffs of snow pushed to the side and lots of deep powder. I never had any issues and it was a blast!
These cars are swedish snow mobiles with the right tires
I was just using all season Avon's I didn't even have snow tires.
