Re: V70R AWD Manual Transmission (745TRBOBRK)

They did actually make the manual for all the years I believe, just never sold them in North America. Few people supposedly imported them to the States, and that's about it.

They were sold in Europe until 1999 and had 250 HP.
I don't think the US received them.
After that there was the 2.4 Ltr. HPT with 265 HP and AWD but it was 5 speed AT only.

My 1998 was pretty strong, not like a T5 but very close. The 2000 V70 Rs were very impressive. If I had not bought a 2001 V70 T5, I would have definitely bought a 2000 V70 R. That car is awesome!
Yannis

Re: V70R AWD Manual Transmission (GrecianVolvo)

First I am not an AT fan, after my lemon GT I won't go AT anymore for many years to come I guess.
Second the AWD system killed a lot of power.
At the time I was driving a chip only classic model V70T5 and that thing was a real performer.
The 2000 R AWD is strong car but after 100 Mph the fun gets less real quick.
My dealer told me he had 3 of those R AWD models compared and all three couldn't reach their stated top speed within a respectable distance.
Now, after almost 3 years, it looks like Volvo still can't deliver a system which can handle the power.
The new R AWD Geartronic is a shadow of it's manual brother.
A maximum of 350 Nm and a 0-60 time which seems to be more than a second slower compared to the manual R.
So in 3 years they gained 20 Nm and a little high end power by mounting a better breathing KKK turbo (Which apperantly is running 1 bar!)
My S60 with 19T turbo reached 290 HP at 1 bar with 12,5% calculated drivetrain loss......

MANUALS rule! Come on...every grandfather in Europe drives a manual and I have never heard any complaints about sore knees!

Yannis

Does Europe have traffic like DC and LA? 8 miles can take 45mins or more, if it rains, bring a lunch...and possibly dinner.

You'd be a brave man to drive around MD/NoVA/DC metro shifting ever few seconds in that morning commute. The traffic is pretty annoying the way it is, can't stand it when I have to take all the $%@$&@ from the other drivers and worry about shifting.

quote:
as much as i enjoy working the gears, heal'n & toe'n, i'd have to think long and hard about having a manual in my everyday car.
...i betcha Johann would cry for an auto-trans if he had to drive my daily route--seems like a hundred clutchings per mile, and most of them would be creeping along in first--nursing the clutch in and out at 1 or 2 mph in stop-and-go lines stretchng to the horizon.

What's worse, keeping your foot on the brake or operate a clutch.
100 times isn't that many.
About the 8 mile 45 minutes thing,
The Netherlands as a whole is the same as LA or NY area during traffic rush hour.
We have 200 miles of jams minimum every day in our small country.
One half of the country is one big city area.
Amsterdam, the Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht and the non accessible green hart make it one large city area (don't know the right word for it)

Re: V70R AWD Manual Transmission (Johann)

ugh. man that sounds bad.
probably 20-50yrs from now it will nearly one big city from Boston to Washington D.C. If there was a better mass transit system, I would definately use it, if you get a seat on the metro(train) you can get some work done and be relaxed during those same 45mins of drivetime.

Manual vs auto in the UK

AWDs over here are also considered too sluggish by the heavy-footed - the owner of the TME distributor in the UK has heavily modified his V70R AWD to compensate for the loss through the transmission.
I've had both auto and manual 850s and found that on the 2WD versions the auto has no perceptible performance loss on the R variant and on my 2.5 20V still allowed for spirited driving when in Sport mode.
The manual R I have now has a very heavy clutch and would be a real sod to drive in London traffic, which is as bad as anything in the US.
But where I live, the manual box is eminently practical and gives me a lot of fun!
