Re: v70r 98 driveshaft option ? (hAmel)

Yes, the price is about right and is common anytime after 90K miles
...and no, no alternative unless you want to chuck the driveshaft and run FWD only.
It WILL drive very well that way, also a good way to test, if it IS the driveshaft

Re: v70r 98 driveshaft option ? (JRL)

Mine did that when I bought it at 93K miles. They've done a lot of front end work and it's smoother, but I haven't replaced the driveshaft. It still does vibrate a bit at speeds over 65 mph but much less. Is this a serious problem if it's not fixed?

Re: v70r 98 driveshaft option ? (JRL)

There's a cut-over for the driveshafts (same one for an XC). It goes by VIN#. Common thing for mfg's to do when they change something in the spec of the car, parts don't always change w/ model year. I'm having this same issue w/ my '98 XC now. But, it's a low speed vibration, and seems to only happen occasionally on low speed semi-sharp turns. More of a 'thump-thump-thump' than a typical vibration. Haven't been driving it much (at all) lately. Need to get it on a lift and see if it's the center joint or one of the end joints. We looked at it a while ago, and it might be the front joint.

I've heard that it's not a good idea to run w/o the rear diff connected. Confuses the computer, etc. And, if the AWD unit is fragile enough to take a crap if the tires vary by 1/16th of an inch, front to rear, I can't see that running w/o the rear for any length of time would be good for it.
