Yes, they do exist! Volvo finally has a picture of their Bi-Xenon headlights at the International website. But I wonder when we will get them in the U.S.

quote:
The Bi-Xenon headlamps provide you with an even better low and high beam in all conditions. They illuminate the road ahead evenly and effectively without dazzling oncoming traffic. The low beam is adjusted automatically in order to provide the best possible light pattern when the car is heavily laden. Option which can only be ordered at the same time as the car.

-Drew

Cool. Those headlights look cool from inside the car (my friend has an S4 with them), but I hate it when I see them coming at me. The high beams should be a Xenon bulb and the low beams should be a regular bulb IMHO.

Can we just change the bulbs, or must we change the entire headlamp, ie including lens as well? The latter can be very expensive. Also, out of curiosity, are the NEW lenses the clear type (ie without the lines to 'spread out' the beam)

The cars coming with xenon or bi-xenon lights from the factory have a whole new set-up, with a ballast, starter, etc. installed (hence their high cost).
As far as lenses, I am not sure if they will come with the clear lenses...I hope so. Here in the US, the standards established for automotive lights are very poor (and idiotic, IMO) compared to those accepted in the European Union countries. Even the reflectors...here they are plastic and in Europe they are metallic. Just this "minor" detail can make a big difference in the light. And here in the US, the majority of the light gets dispersed UP, toward the signs (and a lot just gets lost) while in Europe they focus more forward, so you can see further out.
Yannis

coastal,
Thanks for the great pictures, as that is the first time I have seen them 'for real'. I thought that Volvo was going to the 'high-pressure wash' system on all their cars, but I guess not. I know the new XC90 uses 'high-pressure wash', but I am kind of glad they kept the wipers because they work much better IMHO.
Question; so with this new setup, what is used as the DRL feature? I am assuming that it is the 'round' flash-to-pass light in low powered mode.
-Drew

Wow... excellent pics. They have answered my question! Indeed these are the clear lenses that I am talking about. In Malaysia, my 2001 XC came with the standard and older lense type with lines. The current trend is to use the clear lens and the multi-faceted reflectors. Thanks for info, Coastal and GrecianVolvo.
BTW, I am not entirely sure if plastic reflectors are all that bad. I also have a 240 with the metal reflectors, but they have got rust on them now and don't do their job to throw out light properly. I should change them, but for the time being, I have changed the bulbs to higher wattage ones (100W)to get more light. Std is 60W, I believe.
