After a week or so of flipflopping, ruling out and sustained drooling (not necessarily in that order). I met up with my dealer again for some extended test drives.
The first car I tried was an '02 XC with all the trimmings. Looks aside, and as expected, it drove pretty much the same as my '01 V70 2.4T. I enjoyed the oversized side mirrors. I didn't really notice the ride height. It reminded me that I have two young sons (the oldest just turned 3) that are going to want to go camping, etc. with their father every chance they get... and I hope to oblige them.
Next up to bat was a '02 V70 T5, geartronic, 17" wheels, polar artic blue with taupe leather and aluminum trim. Niice! This was exactly the car I dreamed of... I took it around town, on the freeway, up a few hills and wasn't at all shy about seeing what it could do.
Well, the 'oomph factor' was there, but not as dramatic as I would have expected. It did make plenty of satisfying turbo-like growls (even on city streets), but it also started to shake a bit in the front end when it kicked in. I don't know how to put this... but I was just left with the feeling that the car was 'high strung'. Maybe it's the geartronic? Most likely, it's just me. Heh. Heh. I imagine if was was willing to give up the geartronic I might have walked away with a different impression. I'm sure you stickshift enthusiasts would probably agree.
Just to double check, I drove the XC and then the T5 again... and decided to go with the XC.
More later...

I don't deny that T5's rule. So, no disrepect to you guys, OK? And it would definitely be my choice if I wanted to get a S60. Maybe when my kids are out of booster seats.
Regarding the Bay Area... I live in the Oakland Hills... and though this isn't Minnesota, we do have things like rain and switchbacks. Heh. Heh. We also visit our in-laws in Big Sur every month and they live deep in a canyon, up and down some pretty steep grades... much of it unpaved. For real. We're usually fine when we stick it in 1st., but there's been a more than a few times when we wished we had more than two-wheel drive.
I left the dealer wondering if I wanted to go the OSD route or not... I got home, and then decided against it. I called the sales manager back but he was busy with a customer taking delivery. He said he'd call me tomorrow (today) after he located the car I wanted (color specs and options).
I'm still fond of Polar Artic Blue but I'm having second doubts about the Slate Blue cladings. I'd prefer black myself. We'll see.
Hey, check this out. He told me many of the XC's are shipping w/out a leather stearing wheel cover. I find this odd, considering it's standard equipment on models with a leather interior. Have any of you heard about this before?

OK. OK. I'm a freak. I admit it. I just got off the phone with the sales manager and it seems like he was having trouble finding booster seats (without the 3rd row seat) for the XC in the color I wanted... this gave me the whole afternoon to let fears of future mechanical problems with the non-Haldex viscous-coupling with a plastic cladding that leaves white marks that you can't get out visions run amok in my mind. Oh, yeah. I tried to get work done today as well.
I want to keep this car for a long time. And I'm paying an awful amount of money (hence, me being so weird about the process), and so far, I like the V70 I have so...
I decided to go with the T5 afterall. We agreed on a price, and I take delivery this Wednesday afternoon. There's no holding back now unless I get hit by a bus. Heh. Heh.
So here it is:
2002 V70 T5, Polar Artic Blue, Taupe/Lt. Taupe Leather, Aluminum Brush Trim, Geartronic, Amalthea Alloy Wheels, Cold Weather Package, Integrated Child Booster Cushions, and Touring Package.
Yannis: I know it's not a stick, but can I join your T5 club now? I didn't think I could take the derision and pain associated with not having one.

Cool! Hahaha! WHat a switch! Man, and I was ready to reply to your first post where you were mentioning that you had a hard time finding a Polararctic Metallic XC...I know for sure that Polararctic T5s are almost impossible to get...I am glad that you found what you wanted!
My wife and I were hot for an S60 T5 M, but the baby and the dog put a big cross mark on those plans! But we are thrilled about our car.
And after the ECU upgrade, our smiles are even wider! Here is my vindication...when I told my wife I wanted to upgrade the ECU, I got (naturally) the raised eyebrow and the comments of the type "is this necessary", "isn't it fast enough for you", etc...but she was a good sport and did not VETO...After the upgrade, she reluctantly (and with a sly smile) admitted that the car "is more fun to drive", hmmm...yeah right..."more fun"...it is HEDONISTIC! This past Saturday, I joined her (and my son) after work at a friend's daughter's B-day party. On the way back, I was following her with my demo (S60 AWD)...all of a sudden, an idiot with a BMW X5 4.4i just butts in front of me (and behind her) and pulls right next to her and then...magically, the light turns red...I pick up my phone to call her and "let him have it" but I could not reach her (bad cell). But no worry, after more than 5 years of marriage, we are entirely on the same wavelength...this guy is impatiently waiting for the light to turn green...it turns green and he LAUNCHES the "Ultimate Krautburning Machine" with that big V8; he pulls away by a car's length and I am mentally cursing myself for not being behind the wheel of my beloved T5...but all of a sudden I see my car lighting up the afterburner, I smell the distinctive exhaust of a car "under the whip" and the X5 gets smoked...I mean he just could not do anything...I had the gas pedal of my AWD MASHED to the floor and just could not keep with those two...This all happened for a total of about 15 secs...At the next light, I saw this guy pulling SLOWLY next to my wife and...looking over at her...probably wondering what happened to his "Ultimate Sauerkraut Burning Machine"...hehehe! LOVED IT! First time I have watched MY car in action...should have had a video camera! When we got home, she told me..."I can't believe how quick the car is! This guy (at the 2nd light) just kept looking at the car"...I am sure he could not believe a Volvo (wagon of all cars) smoked him!
Anyway, sorry for the babble but I thought that this was timely! And it is not "MY" T5 club...
Congrats, and let us know how you like it...if you take pics post them, please. And definitely consider the ECU upgrade; I highly recommend it!
Yannis

A family that streetrods together...
Nice story, Yannis. I hope I have nearly as much fun with my T5 as you and your wife have with yours. Even without the ECU upgrade.
Sorry for my ignorance, but how does such a mod affect the warranty?
Darrell: Hey! Good to see you. You have been the source of my excitement (and fear) of getting a T5 with Geartronic. I pray that I don't run in to the same problems you had. Wish me luck. I hope I won't need it.
By the way... I finally got to see 17'' Tethys in the showroom. Now I know what all the hubbub is about. I'm not even a wheel guy but... they're beautiful! Photo's don't to them justice. They look easy to clean, too. Wish I could've gotten them for the T5. Oh, well... Amalthea's will have to do.

Have any of you heard about this before?

Sorry,
forgot to address this. This is not the case, anymore. In the beginning of MY2002, the first 4,000 XCs produced did not have the leather-wrapped steering wheel because Volvo did not have an adequate supply from their vendor. They sent out a notice to all Retailers. But that "problem" was effective for any cars arriving by end of October 2001. Now, if a car comes without the leather-wrapped steering wheel is because a) either whoever orders cars for that Retailer fell asleep at the wheel or b) (s)he was forced to take such poorly built car (that car does not have the Premium package) by his/her Volvo rep because that rep had to unload it. Something that would only happen to me over my dead body!
The ECU upgrade cannot void or affect your warranty in an adverse manner unless that upgrade causes a specific damage to a part covered under warranty. Pretty hard for that to happen. I have known quite a few of our customers who have done many upgrades on their cars (incl. ECUs) and NONE has come back, so far, complaining that their warranty has been voided.
I am glad you liked the Tethys...they are pretty neat and make the car look sportier. But, on the other hand, the Amaltheas are more unique. Not too many alloys out there have that look.
Yannis

Yannis, it's good to hear that you are pleased with the "chip" on your T5. Any views on the availability/suitability of a 2001 XC chip from the same source, or is it just a Grecian Formula?

Pretty significant. I am waiting for the 2002 upgrade so I can chip one of our cars, here at work. Trust me, your car will change personality!
Yannis

What are the details of actually having this done? If I've picked up correctly from what I read:
- You pay for upgrade and make a deposit and they send you new upgraded chip.
- You replace your current chip with new one and send them your current one.
- When they receive your chip they refund your deposit
- Do you then install the chip yourself?
- What about if you want the exhaust upgrade? Do they ship it to you and you either do it yourself or at a garage?
Thanks
Mike

The way it happened with mine is as follows:
Removed my ECU, sent it via FedEx to iPd on a Wednesday. They received it the next day, reprogrammed it and sent it out (via FedEx) the same day. I received it Friday morning and...voila!
You need a special tool to remove and reinstall the ECU, iPd can rent it out to you, I did not have to since I work at a Volvo dealership and this tool is here.
The exhaust is sent to you and you make arrangements with your mechanic or Retailer to have it installed.
Yannis
