I went to my local dealership to test drive a V70 T5 manual, but they didn't have one. The closest thing they had was a S60 T5 manual. Apart from the size difference in the cars, how similar is the performance on these two cars? The S60 was a hoot to drive! Also, does anyone know if the V70 T5 has the same manual gearshift as the S60 T5? I like the aluminum instead of the leather boot. Thanks.
Craig

Re: V70 T5 Manual (cvs)

I don't think the V70 is available with the "spaceball" shifter. It weighs a couple hundred pounds more than the S60 so will be a little slower, but probably nothing you would notice.

I also was unable to test a MT T5 in the US but I drove AT versions repeatedly before buying my manual T5 (via TDS).
BTW, it's a friggin' rocket.
As noted previously, no Spaceball for the V70

Re: V70 T5 Manual (GrecianVolvo)

I think PA is a little far, but your offer is tempting. I have driven a V70 T5 with the geartronic. It was a lot of fun, but I have my heart set on a manual. I sure wish the V70 came with the spaceball shifter; that thing is cool.
I am still very interested in the V70R but the more I hear the more I think it will be too expensive. The dealer I spoke with yesterday said that the R will be around $50k and that it probably won't be part of the "friends and family" program. I'm going to check out the R at the Detroit auto show in a few weeks to see if I can get some real numbers before I make my decision.
Either way I'm sure I won't be disappointed!
Craig

Re: V70 T5 Manual (cvs)

Now the pictures I have seen of the V70 R show the spaceball shifter, so there you have it!
Perhaps wait a few years when the first batch of Rs are coming off lease and get one then for 40% off. Let the first owner take the 20 grand in depreciation hit. I don't see where the new R will depreciate any differently than past Rs or Volvos (or any car for that matter). I have read about the limited production run but I would think that if there is enough demand Volvo will make more, ensuring a steady supply of used Rs.

Re: V70 T5 Manual (mpeng168)

Sure. Actually, Yannis and I have been trying to figure out if it could be done to his car and if I can get someone to pay for it.
I'd like to see it done, and he's the only guy I know with a V70T5 who's local who'd do it.
Now I just have to hit up Volvo for their secret stash of Spaceball parts.
BTW, you have to wonder why they'd develop something unique like the spaceball and then NOT put it anything but the S60.... and only in the T5 Wierd.

Re: V70 T5 Manual ([email protected])

So is this a mod that could be done to the V70 using the current console? All of the pictures I've seen show the S60 console with the spaceball shifter.
I agree, they should spread the wealth and put the spaceball shifter on the T5 as standard. I hope the secret stash of Spaceball parts wasn't on that ship at the bottom of the English Channel.
Craig
