Just bought a 1999 V70 R automatic with only 28k on clock. What a nice car! Very peppy above about 5-10 mph. I have noticed though from a stop, when you stomp on the gas little happens for about 1-2 seconds, then it takes off after reaching about 10-15 MPH. Anyone have experience with this one?

Try not just flat out stomping on the pedal but push in a more gradual motion for the first 1-2 seconds and then all the way floored you might get better response, it takes a while for the transmission to adapt to your foot, and for your foot to adapt to it.

Takes a second or two. It is called turbo lag and is a problem that plagues all turbocharged cars.

Re: V70 R slow off the line? (larryo108)

Thanks for replies. I'm familiar with turbo lag, I previously drove a Saab 900turbo. The problem I've noticed with the V70R is not related to turbo lag. When I stomp on the gas from a dead stop, literally nothing happens for a couple of seconds. Even for a non-turbo charged car, you would expect to take off pretty quickly. I'm thinking more along the lines of a sticky throttle body plate, etc.

There is a noticable difference between the LPT V70s and the HPT V70s. My wifes S70 GLT snaps off the line whereas my 2000 V70R is "smoother" off the line with less punch but about 3k rpm or so, where the LPT seems to level off, the HPT pulls hard.
I believe there are instructions on IPD's website about adjusting the waste gate to 6-8 lbs to cut back on this sensation on HPT cars.
I really enjoy the driving characteristics of our S70 off the line. Even the 98-00 XCs because they are LPTs have a similar snap to them (at least the ones I have driven).
So, the HPT comes on a little later than the LPT and we have the extra weight of the AWD system. I don't think the ECU upgrades from IPD eliminate this sensation.

I have a 1998 V70R with the IPD ECU upgrade and the only slight noticeable delay off the line is the time to bring the boost fully on-line. One time, I tried power braking the car, effectively starting to build boost before launch. The car took off like a rocket chirping the tires of all 4 wheels off the line. It was pretty sweet.

Re: V70 R slow off the line? (defgh1)

this AM a Porsche Carrera 4 pulled up next to me in the left lane at a redlight. i noticed he was staring at the cross-drilled rotors on my wagon, then at the kids in the back seat...then at me as i powerbraked up to 2500 rpm. at the green we BOTH churped all four tires! i bet he poop himself.
no i didn't try to race him... i just smoked the tires and backed off. the kids were cracking up -- they know when daddy's not taking his meds.
you should have seen him checking out my car at the next light.
priceless.
what kind of insecure fool trys to race a Volvo stationwagon full of children?
that would be a Porsche owner, no doubt.

That alone did the job just right.
A fast wagon is def. more of a sleeper than anything.
