Purchased a 2002 v70 in early 2003 (it was a closeout, base 2.4), and it has been fairly reliable. We have approximately 75,000 miles on the car. The only real issue was with the cruise control module, and that was replaced under warranty. As I rarely use cruise control, I would not have noticed but for the warning message.
From time to time their have been a few electronic gremlins, the locks have gone "funky" a few times locking/unlocking inconsistently. I have also had 2-3 bulb warning messages when the bulbs have been working.
I hope I am not cursing myself, but the car has been more reliable than our previous Honda Accord, which had a fuel sensor replaced, two wheel bearings, more headlights replaced than I care to mention, ate windshield wipers, and was perhaps the worst winter car I have driven.
All in all, I really like the v70 and would recommend it to anyone. I believe it is the best wagon on the market.
Anyhow, I was wondering if someone could recommend a dealer for service in the North Chicago suburbs? We have just moved to the area and the it is almost time for a servicing.
Thanks.

Re: v70 Long Term Report (volvofred)

Glad to hear a good report. My car has had it's share of aggravations and fussiness related almost entirely to the unique R features, but I have to say that it has been fundamentally reliable. Of course I've only 25k miles on mine...
it is probably too far north for you to go, but I live in SE Wisconsin and get service from Fields Volvo in Waukesha who seem to do a good job. Also in downtown Milwaukee is Jenkins Volvo, might be a simpler shot straight up 94 for you. Still a long haul though. I've never used them but believe they have a solid repuation.
Fields' home base is in Chicago, I'm pretty sure they have a location on the north end somewhere.

Re: v70 Long Term Report (kenschel)

Kenschel
Thanks for the response. Finding the right dealer is important. There is a Fields Volvo in Libertyville, IL, kind of near our house. I believe it is part of the same dealership chain, so we'll probably give them a try.

I can highly recommend an independent--Ken's Volvo Tech on Rt 176 just west of Waukegan Road in Lake Bluff. Vadis-equipped. Highly recommended.
