I am looking at purchasing a new wagon. Both I'm interested in are 1998 V70's, one an R, the other an AWD. Both similar mileage 57k and 66k. Both seem to be very clean and well maintained. The basic difference, other than performance, is that the R has spent 9 years in southern California and 1 in Florida, whereas the AWD is from NYC area. I'm leaning toward the R because of the no winter status. The price difference is about $12K for the R and $9K for the AWD.
What advise can I get on the matter?

Re: V70 AWD vs V70 R? (PeterE)

GO FOR THE R, especially if you like the availability of the extra power. I agree with you re. the easier winters. I realize it 30% more $. Check the Classified board to check the prices;they seem reasonable but others may have more info. than I. I have '98 AWD and love it, but now wish I had gone for an R and done similar mods as I did to the AWD. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
Regards, PEter

Peter...........
Just a few questions? Are the service records with these cars? They are an important part of the "puzzle" that can sometimes be frustrating when lookin at pre owned cars. Who is selling these cars?...individuals...used car dealers...Volvo dealers?
If there are any concerns as to the "validity" of the cars and you want a pro to check it out..............let me know...I will give you some direction as to who to see and what to look for.

Thanks for the info and advise...I've opted not to buy either of the cars due to distance and especially in the case of the R, the numbers didnt' work for me. I'll keep looking and reading. Thanks!
