Junk yard.

Or, post in the wanted section on VS - there are many 13g/t turbo cores out there.

Next question, what is the symptom? Unless you are constantly overboosting, it's unlikely the actuator.

More likely the CBV - the diaphragm under the 3-bolt cover (if you have a lack of boost issue)

Re: (lookforjoe)

Thank you for responding. I have no boost at all which I assume is the default when the actuator is not working. Apparently the waste gate functions normally when operated by hand and the turbo spins freely (reported by mechanic). It just appears that the actuator is not operating the wastegate to provide boost.

A stuck actuator (with a torn diaphragm) will OVERBOOST, since it is doing nothing to open the wastegate, and has an internal spring that keeps it closed). The actuator's job is to hold the wastegate closed, until the ECU opens it via the TCV (turbo control valve)

Re: (lookforjoe)

Thank you. I had the logic backwards. I pursued your earlier suggestion about the CBV and that seems now a more likely cause. There is a company called Quickbrick Motorsports that sells a QBM CBV Upgrade Kit for $50. Would this do the job?

Yes, it would but QBM is pretty much out of business I believe so you may have to use a company like IPD or vivaperformance who carries some QBM stuff and may have stock left.

Re: (Big Will)

I have a question reguarding all this stuff, figured I'd just post in an ongoing topic than start a new one.

I just installed a boost guage on my S70 T5 yesterday. Here is what happens. I run what seems to be normal boost, then at about 3500-4000 RPMs my boost will spike all the way to 15-17psi, then jumps back down but it stays around 12-13psi. when the tranny shifts (its an auto) the boost will spike again to around 17psi.

From what I've been reading at shift points the boost should drop to 0 correct? not spike way up. I am also 99% sure the car is stock meaning no chips or anything. I bought the car a year ago with 113000 miles on it. Now it has like 132000 miles. There are no CEL's on, and car runs great and obviously makes boost, Im just worried something is wrong with my wastegate or bypass valve.
I originally installed the boost guage cause i thought that I wasnt producing any boost til 3300rpms or so which seemed really high to me, boost does come on *just a couple psi or so* around 2300rpms Im hitting 10 around 3200rpms.

What is wrong with the car? should I replace the wastegate? is there aftermarket rebuild kits for mitsubishi wastegates? I had found a spring and actuator kit a week or so ago, and CANNOT for the life of me find it anymore. Im not usually the type of person to grab something out of a junkyard cause you never know how many miles or what condition it will be in, so I'd much rather stick with a new one, or at the very least find just the spring and diaphram kit. If it helps at all the turbo is a 16T.

thanks in avance for any help http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

No you're chipped.
These run 17-18lbs when chipped, 12 stock.
Yes it should spike but not drop off THAT much.
Your car is old, you may need a new boost control valve or even a turbo, (most likely the valve) and maybe some new vacuum lines.

As for the wastegate just adjust it.
Turn the wastegate adjustment rod (shorter) 1 turn to 2 turns. The boost will come on earlier

Re: (JRL)

I have a hard time believing the car is chipped, it was previously owned by some old lady in the middle of nowhere, and when i bought it there was absolutly ZERO vissible mods. also before buying it the place i bought it from had to replace some boost sensor becuase it was overboosting causing CEL's.

I have already replaced the TCV with the IPD HD TCV. I changed this like 2 months ago cause I've always been skeptical about how slow this thing is off the line...its a dog and a half, especailly with the AC on it takes like 3-4 seconds to get to 20mph then all the sudden at 3500 rpms it just takes off... TCV didnt really fix anything still is super laggy down low.

I will do some more lookin at it today when Im driving, but it seems like the wastegate isnt doing it thing properlly...like its staying slightly open when im trying to accelerate then it will shut and make the crazy spike then drop down to normal, then to jump way back up to 17psi when the car shifts then instantly back down. ill try and take a video or something of the boost guage...it just doesnt seem like eveything is working right. ive also changed all the liines to the TCV, but not all vac lines have been changed as i dont know where they all are. Im really worried its the wastegate... anyone know where to find replacement springs and diaphrams?

Re: (covolvoT5)

Tha's the way most T5s are, slow (A DOG) off the line than whammo!
Do the wastegate adjustment, that helps a lot, check your TCV (BCV) valve, something does not add up.
I'm not kidding you, these get about 12+lbs boost stock and 17+ chipped
That's also the way a T5 is a full throttle and shifting close to redline, Violent split second overboost then shuts off.
You need to adjust a few things but I'm suspect about your overboosting if you thuik this is a stock ECU

I don't believe they are really serviceable. If they are, I don't know where you would get parts. I called Waltrip Volvo and they seem to only be able to order the whole actuator.

Adjust the wastegate rod like already mentioned and you should see boost coming on sooner. Double check your line from the TCV to the actuator and make sure you don't have any leaks.

What you're describing is pretty normal from what I've seen. Keep in mind we're at altitude, so it will take longer to spool, and the turbo will run out of steam earlier, and our cars will knock earlier, so it'll pull boost earlier, etc etc etc.

I've only looked at data from two cars, but they both do exactly what you're saying. They spike and then back off.

I'd recommend using the actual volvo procedure for dialing in your wastegate, mine was off about 2mm from where it should be on my C70.
