Re: V50 T5 Review on Autospeed (autoduel)

What was this guy smoking when he did the test? This must have been his first day on the job, seriously.
An entire paragraph discussing the procedure to fold down the rear seats...what does he expect (that lazy a$$) power assist?
"The controls are a mixed bag." "However, the centre console has a multitude of tiny buttons which – even with familiarity – defy intuitive use." Has he driven an Audi lately?
What a not so nice guy.

IMO this "test" is lame. If you don't have objective numbers to go with your subjective analysis it's a distinct waste of time.
I'm 6'6" and I find that the car has plenty of room. My rear passengers have been quite happy with it as well (as long as they're not sitting behind me).
...and the wagon section is excellent for hauling my two 60 lb dogs in comfort -- they really enjoy the car.

Re: (quick)

I read this test when I was still car shopping. I kept it all in mind when I went to the Volvo dealer. First time I actually sat in a V50, and looked around, I knew the guy was a ****.
I DO agree that the door pockets are small, but it's a great place to put my sat radio remote. The little cubby behind the console? Sat radio unit, and VI when not in use. I'm 6'3", 250, and find I have a ton of room in the car. I had 2 guys, and several days worth of camping gear in it last week. Tons of room, we didn't even have to put anything in the back seat. Sure, a V70 is bigger, but people who buy a V50, buy it because it's what we need.
Al

While he did harp on the seats and other storage issues, I really can't disagree with him. The point of a wagon is, after all, to use the rear space. I dread having to lower the rear seats on my 40, and it is a horribly clumsy design.
I also can't disagree with his complaint of the pillar thickness obstructing vision. Such is the price we pay for safety, I suppose. At least I'm protected from that car I couldn't see...
I do disagree with his evaluation of the center console, and find it completely simple. The center buttons (which are very busy) are never required in my experience.
Overall I found it to be a very fair review. He slammed the poorly designed features that we overlook or accept, and praised the car where it is due.

Why does everyone focus on the negative? He loved the engine and drivetrain. Why would you need to access the climate control buttons anyway when in 1st, 3rd, or 5th gears?
Let's not forget why most buyers choose Volvo:
"Both passive and active safety are well up to Volvo’s exemplary reputation"
Quit whining, its a small wagon, if you want a cargo hauler there are other choices.
Re: V50 T5 Review on Autospeed (quick)

I believe it is a "Sportwagon" in Volvo-speak. The point is, if you want more room, get a V70 or XC90. Don't complain about the lack of room in a SMALL car.

He didn't state his frame of reference or the hard numbers to back it up. Comparing a V50 against a Ford Excursion shouldn't be implied, it should be explicit. Otherwise the review leaves a lot of room for interpretation.)

Re: V50 T5 Review on Autospeed (rodlentino) - cargo and seating

I find the reviews that complain about "small cargo space" in the V50 amusing, since I did something the reviewers seem unable to master: I measured the cargo space.
Just FYI, here are the results H x W x D, in inches, at the floor. Height is measured to bottom of cargo cover. Width is "constant span" - not including odd bump outs.
1994 SAAB 900S: 19 x 38 x 38 (102.4 WB, 182.6 overall length) - my current vehicle
Audi A3: 17.5 x 33.5 x 31.5 (101.4 " wheelbase, 168.7 overall) - talk about "wheels at the corners"!
SAAB 9-3 SportCombi: 17.5 x 40 x 38 (105.3" WB, 183.2" overall)
V50: 16 x 38 x 39 (103.9 WB, 177.7 overall) - the cargo cover design could be better.
I also measured the SAABaru 9-2x and the A4 Avant. I don't have those numbers with me, but the Avant was comparable to the SAAB SportCombi and the 9-2x/Impreza is between the A3 and the V50 - IIRC it was about 37 D and 33 W.
So, within it's class, the V50 has reasonable "trunk" space. The reviewer also missed an important design trade - the V50's "fold and tumble" rear seatis somewhat less convenient, but it gives you a MUCH more comfortable back seat. It allows for a seat cushion that is higher off the floor, avoiding the "knees to chin" syndrome I found in the SAAB SportCombi. I found the V50 to have a much more comfortable back seat than the competition and, with the ability to fold the front pax seat forward, excellent flexibility - that's one reason it's currently my favorite among possible replacements for my SAAB.
The autospeed reviewer was, IMHO, sloppy.

Re: V50 T5 Review on Autospeed (rodlentino) - cargo and seating (Gromit)

I think he brings up some valid points- some buttons are confusing. The stereo and climate controls are fine. It's the recirculate, the defrost buttons, and those buttons in that area that are a problem. I have to search for those buttons. The door bins are useless.
I think it's a valid point to bring up the small interior space. A lot of people think Volvo station wagon and they immediately think of those old Volvo wagons with tons of space.

Re: V50 T5 Review on Autospeed (eurotrash)

My driver's door bin holds My gas & maintenance log book, a small 6-ring notebook. The center console seems to swallow whatever I throw into it.... calculator, small LED flashlight, garage door remote (I still have to program the HOMELINK! ) cell phone charger, safety glasses & door security badge for work... Everything else gets stowed in the trunk! Sunglasses & CD's get put in the tiny bin ahead of the center console.

Re: V50 T5 Review on Autospeed (POWERSTROKE)

He's right upon first acquaintanec about the buttons, but he obviouslty didn;t spend any great deal of time in the car as when you live with it day-to-day there's only about 2 things you need to use when driving along(temp, wheel stereo controls) The rest gets taken car of by the car, I only use defrost when the cars in the drive/car park before setting off.

You know.... lol there is one thing that is funny to me. Dont know why... But I cant fully tilt a Arizona Iced Tea can up to drink it all without tilting my head. In the Audi I can... but in the Volvo no. lol Thats the most of my worries... as far as room goes.
