Hi
My wifes 98' V40 1.9 TD has recently developed loads of really odd problems and I was hoping someone here can help. I will give you a brief run down from the beginning.
It was running perfectly. Parked the car and did not use for nearly 8 weeks. When I went to start it the battery was dead. Charged the battery, still no juice. Checked battery, all fine. Checked fuses, couldn't believe it but the main 120amp engine fuse had blown! (BTW I had not connected the battery via incorrect terminals) Replaced that, got power but then the strange stuff started to happen.
No Glow Plug light
Really struggled to start, loads of smoke.
No rev counter working.
No real power on pull away.
Air con working when switched off.
Cooling fan runs from start even when cool.
Volvo checked car and cannot find the problem. They thinks it is the Engine Management Unit (EMU) which has failed and have quoted inexcess of £700 to repair, and they wont even guarantee that will cure it. Can anyone shed any light on this problem and if you think it is the EMU can I get it done for a more reasonable price and where.
Please help as this car has done over 150K great miles for us and we do not want to get rid of it.
Thanks in advance.
Struggs

did you charge the battery while it's in the car or take it out and charge it?
If you charge it while sitting in the car, it might have thing to do w/ the eletrical system

If you took off cables and then charged it in car to full charge. And then reconnected cables and tried to start it is odd. Or if you took out of car and then reinstalled it that is odd. But if you charged in car with cables connected and use just jumper clips to charge it from a charger unit you blew many things doing so. On the bright side if you did not need to use the car for 8 weeks before, then it is not like you need to use it everyday now. SO you have time to replace alot of things till you get it running again. If you do, start the car at least ONCE a week form now on.
